A função do oftalmologista vai além de diagnosticar e tratar as doenças oculares e assume papel importante no estudo das causas e circunstâncias que levam a redução da capacidade visual por fatores que podem ser prevenidos 1 .O traumatismo ocular contuso é mais freqüente no adulto jovem e sexo masculino, na proporção de 4:1, em relação ao sexo feminino 2-3 .Atinge igualmente a raça branca e negra, no entanto a raça negra apresenta lesões mais graves que levam a cegueira 4 .Descritores: Traumatismos oculares/epidemiologia.
