The ester fraction 2 isolated by gradient elution chromatography of unsaponified beeswax on silica gel was divided into a saturated and an unsaturated fraction. The individual groups of compounds obtained by saponification of both fractions of esters 2 were further separated by column chromatography on silica gel and analyzed in detail by TLC, GLC, and by IR, MS and NMR spectrometry. Homologous series of saturated mono carboxylic acids (mostly palmitic acid, C I6 ), unsaturated monocarboxylic acids (mostly oleic acid, CIS)' hydroxyalkanes (C 24 to C 34 ), monocarboxylic monohydroxy acids (mostly lS-hydroxypalmitic acid, C 16 ) and 1,(00-1)-dihydroxyalkanes (C 20 -C 32 ) were thus identified. The chemical composition of some minor components is also discussed. On the basis of the results obtained, views are proposed on the possibilities of mutual arrangement of the individual components in the original saturated and unsaturated esters 2.While in a previous communication I we took up the chemical composition of the group of simple saturated and unsaturated alkyl esters of beeswax (esters 1), the present paper is devoted to a detailed analysis of another ester group (esters 2) which were also isolated by gradient elution chromatography on a column of silica gel. This group of compounds (designated as esters In was isolated from unsaponified beeswalt by chromatography on a column of silica gel by Fuchs and de Jong 2 . Carlier and coworkers 3 separated unsaponified beeswax by preparative chromatography on a thin layer of silica gel. These authors did not separate the above group of esters from the following group of esters.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
