This paper analyzes the dynamics of the Zapatista uprising with research tools inspired by recent social movement theory. It finds that the insurgent indigenous peasants of Chiapas rose up in arms under conditions of relative economic and political deprivation at a particularly opportune moment after developing a project of insurgency and acquiring significant organizational strength. Militarily, the Zapatistas would not have been able to hold out long against the overwhelming force of the federal army. But enormous media attention and massive national and international protest prevented the regime from military crackdowns. The Zapatistas' ability to link personal, organizational, and informational networks has helped to gain crucial support. Using globalized means of communication, they were able to disseminate their messages around the world where they touched a chord in the discourse of an incipient global civil society linked by non-governmental organizations, fax machines, and the internet.
Long-chain n-alkylamine surfactants have been used as structure-directing agents in the synthesis of mesoporous aluminophosphates by a highly cooperative formation mechanism in an alcoholic system. Small amounts of water in the synthesis mixture play a significant role in the hydrolysis of the aluminum precursor (Al[O i Pr] 3 ) and are important for the quality of the mesostructured products. The materials exhibit disordered mesostructures, the stability and structural order of which can be improved by a postsynthetic thermal treatment. The products are then stable enough for the removal of the surfactant molecules by acidic solvent extraction, yielding surface areas up to 690 m 2 /g.
The atomic structure of ordered mesostructured aluminophosphates with dodecyl phosphate as the structuredirecting template was investigated by multinuclear solid-state NMR. Two different types of materials were studied: one with the template headgroup as the only phosphate source and one where additionally phosphoric acid was used in the synthesis. All 31 P and 27 Al NMR resonances can be subdivided into three groups depending on the sample composition. Furthermore, 2D heteronuclear correlation NMR measurements allow a conclusive and unambiguous identification of the phosphate headgroup resonances of the template molecules and the determination of water and/or hydroxyl units. Most notably, there is an obvious correlation between the d 001 values of the samples as measured by powder X-ray diffraction and the appearance of the various groups of 27 Al and 31 P resonances.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
