Twelve cases of Mycobacterium bovis subsp. caprae infection have occurred in four humans, three cattle, and five red deer in western Austria since 1994. DNA-fingerprinting of the isolates suggested transmission in and between these species over several years. Contact with cattle, but not with goats, was found to be associated with three of four human cases
A young male Austrian tourist, aged 23 years and unvaccinated against rabies, was bitten by a dog in Morocco in July 2004. One month later he was hospitalised in Ceuta with symptoms compatible with rabies. He died on 23 September in an Austrian hospital after a diagnosis of rabies was confirmed by FAT, IHC and RT-PCR (including sequencing) of the neck skin and the RT-PCR (including sequencing) of the pharyngeal swab. This Austrian case of laboratory confirmed rabies highlights the urgent need for reinforcement of the international recommendations for travel vaccinations.
Sixteen culture confirmed cases of enteric infection with Salmonella enterica serotype Oranienburg were detected between August 10 and September 29 1999 in Tyrol (Austria). Ten of them suffered bloody diarrhoea and six were asymptomatic carriers. Intervie
Summary Pox infection in a domestic cat A pox virus infection in a castrated 7‐year old male cat resulted in pocklike inflorescences of the skin. Pathological‐anatomical and histological findings are presented, as well as the findings with electronmicroscopy. The authors discuss the possibility that the pox virus found could be pathogenic to man. Because the virus could not be grown in egg culture or in a variety of cell cultures it was not possible to classify the virus. Leaving aside the descriptions of pox infections in the great cats and the demonstration of a cowpox infection in a 10‐weeks old kitten, the case presented here is seen as the second account of pox virus in a domestic cat. Apart from the unknown source of the infection, the epidemiological and epizootiological questions are discussed and the complete cessation of vaccination protection of man against smallpox is viewed critically.
Summary The significance of microcalcifications in comedo carcinoma in the dog and cat Ten comedo carcinomas in dogs and five in cats were selected because of the presence of foci of calcification and were examined by preparatory radiography and histologically. Foci of calcification were found by radiography in 8 of the bitches and 3 of the cats, whereas by histological methods they were found in all the animals. The similarity of this tumour type to that in women is borne out by their histogenetic identity. Use of ultrastructural techniques of examination in man shows that at least a part of the focal calcification is due to excretory activities of the tumour cells and not to simple dystrophic calcification, since the calcium deposits have their origin within cells. To clear up this problem ultrastructural studies are required of animal tumours.
Summary Calcinosis in Horse jointly occurring with lymphatic Leucosis of the Small Intestine and the mesenteric Lymph Nodes In a 2‐year old stallion the joint occurrence of calcinosis and lymphatic leucosis is described. The pathological‐anatomical and histopathological findings are described in detail and lead to the conclusion that there was no evidence of hyperparathyroidism. Whether any relationship existed between the two diseases — leucosis and calcinosis — remains undecided.
