Las fronteras de la diplomacia pública, que antes coincidían con las de los países soberanos, cada vez se han ido diluyendo más en favor de regiones con dimensión de estado, o incluso de ciudades con una gran importancia estratégica por motivos económicos, geográficos, demográficos, naturales, etc. La presente investigación se centra en el análisis de la comunicación institucional online, a través de los sitios web oficiales, en relación con la diplomacia pública de una selección de ciudades iberoamericanas de importancia estratégica. En concreto, se analizan las ciudades de Monterrey (México), Medellín (Colombia), Lisboa y Oporto en Portugal y Badajoz y Mérida en España. Se utiliza una metodología de análisis de la información de los portales webs mediante la aplicación de un modelo con diversos grupos de indicadores, que ha sido validado previamente. Los resultados muestran que, si bien hay diferencias entre las ciudades analizadas en función de sus características intrínsecas, en general se aprecia un interés en la comunicación de la diplomacia pública y en tenerla como un objetivo principal, aunque también se observa una limitación de recursos, en especial en la profesionalización de dicha comunicación.
