The northeastern region of Bangladesh often experiences flash flooding during the pre-harvesting period of the boro rice crop, which is the major cereal crop in the country. In this study, our objective was to delineate the impact of the 2017 flash flood (that initiated on 27 March 2017) on boro rice using multi-temporal Landsat-8 OLI and MODIS data. Initially, we opted to use Landsat-8 OLI data for mapping the damages; however, during and after the flooding event the acquisition of cloud free images were challenging. Thus, we used this data to map the cultivated boro rice acreage considering the planting to mature stages of the crop. Also, in order to map the extent of the damaged boro area, we utilized MODIS data as their 16-day composites provided cloud free information. Our results indicated that both the cultivated and damaged boro area estimates based on satellite data had strong relationships while compared to the ground-based estimates (i.e., r2 values approximately 0.92 for both cases, and RMSE of 18,374 and 9380 ha for cultivated and damaged areas, respectively). Finally, we believe that our study would be critical for planning and ensuring food security for the country.

Bathymetry has a great importance in coastal projects. Obtaining proper bathymetric information is necessary for navigation, numerical modeling, and coastal zone management studies. Over the past three decades, a number of measuring protocols have been validated for bathymetry mapping, either by means of echosounding or LIght Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). Although these traditional methods hold a high vertical accuracy, they may have limitations in accessibility for some areas. Remote sensing (RS) techniques can be alternatively utilized for bathymetry extraction and update for such cases. The satellite derived bathymetry (SDB) can be analytically or empirically obtained based on various RS datasets with different spatiotemporal resolution. The current study proposes a methodology to spatially enhance the Landsat-derived bathymetry. Two different satellite images, i.e., Landsat and PlantScope with a spatial resolution of 30 and 3 m respectively have been assessed in bathymetry mapping. The Landsat image resolution has been spatially enhanced to match the Planetscope resolution. The panchromatic band of the Landsat image has been downscaled and used for pan-sharpening the multispectral bands. The bathymetry was empirically estimated from the blue and green spectral bands using the linear model by Lyzenga. The SDB model was calibrated using field measurements of water depths observed by a single beam echosounder. The Bathymetry detection methodology has been applied in an area of the Northern coast of Egypt. The SDB from the PlanetScope, Landsat 8 OLI, and Enhanced Landsat 8 OLI were assessed using error analysis. It was found that the Enhanced Landsat has a comparable result with the PlanetScope. The root mean square error is 0.38 and 0.43 m for PlanetScope and Enhanced Landsat, respectively. The current methodology was also tested by the ratio transform model for SDB and the results revealed the same conclusion as the linear model. Thus, the developed algorithm provides SDB using free Landsat images that is of comparable accuracy to the relatively expensive PlanetScope SDB.

Forest fires are natural disasters that create a significant risk to the communities living in the vicinity of forested landscape. To minimize the risk of forest fires for the resilience of such urban communities and forested ecosystems, we proposed a new remote sensing-based medium-term (i.e., four-day) forest fire danger forecasting system (FFDFS) based on an existing framework, and applied the system over the forested regions in the northern Alberta, Canada. Hence, we first employed moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived daily land surface temperature (Ts) and surface reflectance products along with the annual land cover to generate three four-day composite for Ts, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and normalized difference water index (NDWI) at 500 m spatial resolution for the next four days over the forest-dominant regions. Upon generating these four-day composites, we calculated the variable-specific mean values to determine variable-specific fire danger maps with two danger classes (i.e., high and low). Then, by assuming the cloud-contaminated pixels as the low fire danger areas, we combined these three danger maps to generate a four-day fire danger map with four danger classes (i.e., low, moderate, high, and very high) over our study area of interest, which was further enhanced by incorporation of a human-caused static fire danger map. Finally, the four-day scale fire danger maps were evaluated using observed/ground-based forest fire occurrences during the 2015–2017 fire seasons. The results revealed that our proposed system was able to detect about 75% of the fire events in the top two danger classes (i.e., high and very high). The system was also able to predict the 2016 Horse River wildfire, the worst fire event in Albertian and Canadian history, with about 67% agreement. The higher accuracy outputs from our proposed model indicated that it could be implemented in the operational management, which would be very useful for lessening the adverse impact of such fire events.

The Athabasca River watershed plays a dominant role in both the economy and the environment in Alberta, Canada. Natural and anthropogenic factors rapidly changed the landscape of the watershed in recent decades. The dynamic of such changes in the landscape characteristics of the watershed calls for a comprehensive and up-to-date land-use and land-cover (LULC) map, which could serve different user-groups and purposes. The aim of the study herein was to delineate a 2016 LULC map of the Athabasca River watershed using Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived enhanced vegetation index (EVI) images, and other ancillary data. In order to achieve this, firstly, a preliminary LULC map was developed through applying the iterative self-organizing data analysis (ISODATA) clustering technique on 24 scenes of Landsat-8 OLI. Secondly, a Terra MODIS-derived 250-m 16-day composite of 30 EVI images over the growing season was employed to enhance the vegetation classes. Thirdly, several geospatial ancillary datasets were used in the post-classification improvement processes to generate a final 2016 LULC map of the study area, exhibiting 14 LULC classes. Fourthly, an accuracy assessment was carried out to ensure the reliability of the generated final LULC classes. The results, with an overall accuracy and Cohen’s kappa of 74.95% and 68.34%, respectively, showed that coniferous forest (47.30%), deciduous forest (16.76%), mixed forest (6.65%), agriculture (6.37%), water (6.10%), and developed land (3.78%) were the major LULC classes of the watershed. Fifthly, to support the data needs of scientists across various disciplines, data fusion techniques into the LULC map were performed using the Alberta merged wetland inventory 2017 data. The results generated two useful maps applicable for hydro-ecological applications. Such maps depicted two specific categories including different types of burned (approximately 6%) and wetland (approximately 30%) classes. In fact, these maps could serve as important decision support tools for policy-makers and local regulatory authorities in the sustainable management of the Athabasca River watershed.

Wildland fires are some of the critical natural hazards that pose a significant threat to the communities located in the vicinity of forested/vegetated areas. In this paper, our overall objective was to study the structural damages due to the 2016 Horse River Fire (HRF) that happened in Fort McMurray (Alberta, Canada) by employing primarily very high spatial resolution optical satellite data, i.e., WorldView-2. Thus, our activities included the: (i) estimation of the structural damages; and (ii) delineation of the wildland-urban interface (WUI) and its associated buffers at certain intervals, and their utilization in assessing potential risks. Our proposed method of remote sensing-based estimates of the number of structural damages was compared with the ground-based information available from the Planning and Development Recovery Committee Task Force of Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB); and found a strong linear relationship (i.e., r2 value of 0.97 with a slope of 0.97). Upon delineating the WUI and its associated buffer zones at 10 m, 30 m, 50 m, 70 m and 100 m distances; we found existence of vegetation within the 30 m buffers from the WUI for all of the damaged structures. In addition, we noticed that the relevant authorities had removed vegetation in some areas between 30 m and 70 m buffers from the WUI, which was proven to be effective in order to protect the structures in the adjacent communities. Furthermore, we mapped the wildland fire-induced vulnerable areas upon considering the WUI and its associated buffers. Our analysis revealed that approximately 30% of the areas within the buffer zones of 10 m and 30 m were vulnerable due to the presence of vegetation; in which, approximately 7% were burned during the 2016 HRF event that led the structural damages. Consequently, we suggest to remove the existing vegetation within these critical zones and also monitor the region at a regular interval in order to reduce the wildland fire-induced risk.

Pan-sharpening is the process of fusing higher spatial resolution panchromatic (PAN) with lower spatial resolution multispectral (MS) imagery to create higher spatial resolution MS images. Here, the objective was to study the local warming trend and its driving factors in the natural subregions of Alberta using a remote-sensing approach. We applied the Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimator on the day and nighttime MODIS LST time-series images to map and quantify the extent and magnitude of monthly and annual warming trends in the 21 natural subregions of Alberta. We also performed a correlation analysis of LST anomalies (both day and nighttime) of the subregions with the anomalies of the teleconnection patterns, i.e., Pacific North American (PNA), Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), Arctic oscillation (AO), and sea surface temperature (SST, Niño 3.4 region) indices, to identify the relationship. May was the month that showed the most significant warming trends for both day and night during 2001–2020 in most of the subregions in the Rocky Mountains and Boreal Forest. Subregions of Grassland and Parkland in southern and southeastern parts of Alberta showed trends of cooling during daytime in July and August and a small magnitude of warming in June and August at night. We also found a significant cooling trend in November for both day and night. We identified from the correlation analysis that the PNA pattern had the most influence in the subregions during February to April and October to December for 2001–2020; however, none of the atmospheric oscillations showed any significant relationship with the significant warming/cooling months.
