The toxic and antifeeding effects of Du‐Ter (Triphenyl‐tin‐hydroxide) on the cotton leaf‐worm, Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. was investigated, using the topical technique and the direct injection technique through the buccal cavity. The following dosages of the active ingredient, dissolved in acetone, were tested against the third instar larva, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 ppm. Du‐Ter showed a stonger lethal effect on the cotton leafworm as a stomach poison. Percentages of non fed larvae were evidently much higher when insects were treated orally than topically. The feeding capacity of the third instar larvae was very much reduced due to applying Du‐Ter orally. Treated larvae with 100 and 800 ppm consumed an average leaf areas of 1.29 and 0.04 cm2 compared to 10.9 cm2 devoured b the untreated larva, during 3 days.
The scientific aaproach for this study required the establishment of a standard laboratory colony of Spodoptera littoralis. Out of the initial colony 3000 larvae, were dealed into 4 groups, each one was subjected to one specific diet for ten successive generations. Four common host plants were chosen for this study: castor beans, sweet potato, cotton and alfalfa.
Experiments were carried out on the fifth and tenth generation offsprings of the standard laboratory colony, to evaluate the effect of the four diets on larval duration and the net increase in larval weight/day for a period of ten days (from 4th to 14th day).
With respect to larval duration, castor and alfalfa were similar in their effect whereas larvae required 15 days to develop. Sweet potato and cotton were similar in their effect where larvae took 19 days approximately. The net increase in larval weights was highest with castor and alfalfa.

Du‐Ter (Triphenyl‐tin‐hydroxide) 50 % WP was tested as aqueous suspension of 0.25 % concentration against the third larval instar of the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis Bois. in laboratory cage experiments. Larvae were confined to ten weeks age potted castor bean plants.
Treating one part of the plant urged the larvae to disperse to untreated foliage, and resulted in poor leaf protection. However Du‐Ter gave good leaf protection of 75 % when the whole plants were sprayed.
The effect of Du‐Ter as an antifeedant is discussed.
