Digesting the data hose that cities are constantly producing is complex; data is usually structured with different criteria, which makes comparative analysis of multiple cities challenging. However, the publicly available data from the Spanish cadaster contains urban information in a documented format with common semantics for the whole territory, which makes these analyses possible. This paper uses the information about the 3D geometry of buildings, their use and their year of construction, stored in cadastral databases, to study the relation between the built environment (what the city is) and the urban plan (what the city wants to become), translating the concepts of the cadastral data into the semantics of the urban plan. Different representation techniques to better understand the city from the pedestrians’ point of view and to communicate this information more effectively are also discussed.Postprint (published version
The objective of this research is to provide an updated state of the art of the interventions of rehabilitation in large housing estates built during the period of 1950-1975 in Europe, especially those interventions that focused on the modification of physical aspects, with the aim of providing analytic instruments that can be applied in future research on the implementation of verified intervention models.
Can we use city planning as a tool to prevent crime? This is the analysis of an urban intervention in a neighborhood called La Mina (2000) and it´s influence on the security and violence in the neighborhood. A neighborhood with a history of physical and social conflicts and segregation. The methodology used in the research was triangulated between literature review, collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. The research results corroborate our hypothesis showing that urbanism could be used as an effective way to prevent crime, but such interventions are not sufficient to create a safe neighborhood, or have a good living. They must first eradicated underlying social problems such as drug traffic and consumption, truancy, antisocial behavior, etc. In the district of La Mina, 12 years have passed and more than 200 million have been invested. The neighborhood is not dangerous but is still controversial and has serious problems of coexistence.
