Thiocyanate levels were determined in serum and urine samples obtained from a human population sample of healthy non-smoking volunteers (aged between 14 and 30 years) of both sexes known to eat gari-based meals at least once a day. The samples were collected before and 3-4 hours after a gari- or rice-based meal. The values obtained before the test meals showed a wide variation, ranging between 39.20 +/- 1.95 to 160.95 +/- 8.06 mumol/l of serum, and 81.92 +/- 9.78 to 294.01 +/- 14.70 mumol/l of urine. For each volunteer, the serum and urine thiocyanate were affected by the test meals. Average increases of 18 and 20% were observed for serum and urine thiocyanate, respectively, following a gari-based meal. A rice-based meal produced, on the average, 10% decrease in both serum and urine thiocyanate. No significant effect of sex or age on the thiocyanate levels was observed. The gari samples used in the study, as well as random samples from the locality of study, had no detectable thiocyanate but contained between 0.013 and 0.015 mg cyanide per kg of gari. These findings indicate that conversion to thiocyanate is a significant pathway in the metabolism of HCN and contributes significantly to thiocyanate found in body fluids and tissues of man. In addition, support is provided for the possible involvement of the sulphur-transferases in the process of cyanide detoxication.

Aim: This study investigated the proximate and phytochemical composition of Brachystegia eurycoma leaves. Methods: Crude ethanol extract of B. eurycoma leaves was obtained by cold extraction method.  AOAC method was used for proximate analysis. Phytochemical profiling was done with qualitative phytochemical evaluation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analytical method. Matching and interpretation of the spectral was done with the National Institute standard and Technology (NIST05) library. Results: The proximate analysis result showed B. eurycoma leaves to be abundant in param­eters evaluated in the order of 31.47±0.43% Carbohydrate > 15.15±0.04% Ash > 14.45±0.15 crude fibre > 13.83±0.32 protein > 13.14±0.22 moisture > 1.97±0.01 fat. Qualitative phytochemical analysis detected alkaloid, saponin, tannin, diterpenes, phenol, quinine, flavonoid, protein, xanthoprotein and cardiac glycoside in the leaves of B. eurycoma. GC/MS data showed that the prevailing volatile bioactive compounds in ethanol leaf extract of B. eurycoma were 3-O-Methyl-d-glucose (13.23%), cis-9-Hexadecenal (10.40%), Desulphosinigrin (10.34%), Phytol (7.58%), Hydroquinone (7.23%), n-Hexadecanoic acid (6.61%), Oleoyl chloride (6.10%), 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z)- (5.89%), Hexadecanoic acid, (2.97%), Benzofuran, 2,3-dihydro-(1.94%), Hexadecanoic acid, 2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl) (1.92%). Conclusion: The result of this preliminary investigation reveals the potentials of B. eurycoma leaves as candidate for food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutraceutical industries.

The effects of crude leaf extract of Carica papaya (Linn) on aspartate aminostransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes, neutrophils, thrombocytes and on body weight of normal albino rats were investigated. Albino rats weighing between 74 g and 90.5 g, of both sexes were used for the study. 2 ml of 0.11 g/ml aqueous extract was administered daily to each of the experimented rats for the 7 and 14 days study periods respectively, using stomach canula and the parameters analysed using standard methods. Observations indicated that extract of C. papaya (Pawpaw) leaves did not induce any significant changes in the levels of AST and ALT. The results also showed that the C. papaya leaves extract influenced the immunological pathways. There was an increase in the levels of white blood cells, thrombocytes, lymphocytes and neutrophils of the test rats, and a significant weight gain in the animals at the end of the study period. Based on the findings in this work, the C. papaya leaves extract tested could hardly advance any adverse effects on the liver and also have immunological effect on the animal body.
