Le professeur G.-B. Grassi.-Le 5 mai 1925, mourait presque subite ment à Rome le professeur Giovanni-Battista Grassi, grande figure parmi les zoologistes et les parasitologues. Né le 27 mars 1855, il fit ses études au lycée de Côme, puis à l'Université de Pavie. Il se consacra ensuite à l'enseignement, fut d'abord professeur à l'Université de Catane, puis à celle de Rome, où il était professeur ordinaire d'anatomie comparée et directeur du Cabinet d'anatomie comparée. L'étude des problèmes les plus délicats de zoologie et de parasitologie le passionna toute sa vie et il publia, de 1878 à 1925, une quantité consi dérable de travaux du plus haut intérêt, dont nous ne pouvons donner ici qu'un court aperçu. Ses études portèrent sur les sujets les plus variés: il montra le premier les relations qui existent entre les leptoeéphales et les anguilles ; dans le domaine de l'entomologie, il étudia le phyl loxéra, les termites, les moustiques ; en helminthologie, il fit de nom breux travaux ; il décrivit notamment l'évolution de D. caninum chez la puce du chien. Le problème de la malaria en Italie l'intéressa parti culièrement et son livre intitulé : « Studi di uno zoolopo sulla mala ria », paru en 1900, met entièrement au point la question du paludisme. L'idée vint alors à Grassi d'entreprendre en Italie la lutte antimalarique; ses expériences commencèrent en 1899 et furent rapidement couronnées de succès. C'est à cette époque que j'eus l'honneur de travailler dans son laboratoire. Aussi est-ce pour moi un devoir de rendre hommage au savant, dont la brillante carrière scientifique lui valut, en 1908, d'être nommé sénateur du Royaume d'Italie. Grassi était membre de la Reale Accademia dei Lincei et de nombreuses Sociétés scientifiques. M. Neveu-Lemaire.
