After general medical training in Karachi he came to the Maudsley Hospital to specialise in psychiatry and subsequently worked at Long Grove Hospital, Surrey. At Birmingham he was university postgraduate tutor and course organiser as well as director of the MRCPsych course. He lectured and participated in conferences all over the world, and was the author of many papers on solvent and alcohol misuse and drink driving. He was a valuable member of many committees, including the GMC, BMA (being chairman of the local division), and the Overseas Doctors Association. He leaves a wife, Taro, and a son and daughter (both medical students).
