Three different types of proportional gas detectors are under development at the Danish Space Research Institute for use in X -ray astronomy. A conventional multiwire proportional counter, a novel microstrip detector and a parallel gap counter with a segmented anode readout. Instead of wires, the micro strip counter employs very narrowly spaced conducting strips deposited on an isolating substrate. Excellent energy resolutions of 13% (5.9 keV) and 27% (1.5 keV) have been achieved. Several possible methods for position readout for this detector are reported. The parallel gap detector is equipped with a wedge and strip electrode as the anode and has been operated with gas amplifications up to 105. The signals induced in the segmented anode allow for accurate two -dimensional position determination.
The Danish Space Research Institute will provide a set of four imaging microstrip proportional counters (MSPC) as part of XSPECT, the Danish contribution to the SODART telescopes1. A high-and a low-energy detector (HEPC and LEPC) will be provided for each of the SODART telescopes. The design is fixed and a prototype of LEPC is under construction. The present paper describes the imaging properties of this detector. The inherent position resolution is <0.2 mm around 6 keV, and positional nonliniearities are <0.1 mm. The gas gain is independent of position to better than 0.5%. Finally, the point spread function, important for studying weak objects in the vicinity of strong ones, has been measured.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
