. KARAMIRHAILOVA (a), M. MLADENOVA (a), and X. GEORGIEV (b) KCI : Eu?', y-irradiated a t room temperature, is known to luminesce on photoexcitation in the F band with the emission spectrum of the impurity ion. Several experiments are made now: firstly, the emission-excitation spectrum is found to exhibit a peak a t about 600 nm. Secondly, the samples are excited with the SH of a mode-locked Nd glass laser. The maximum emission response occurs delayed a t about 400 ns relative to the laser-pulse peak. The luminescent quantum yield is estimated to b e about 1%. The decay kinetics of the phosphorescent tail is also followed. , 4 tentative model is discussed in which the luminescence results from a two-step electron tunneling between excited F and E u levels.
The formation of color centres a t R T in y-irradiated KCI crystals doped with Eu2+ ions in a wide concentration range is studied by optical absorption, thermoluminescence, and the ITC method. I n contrast t o the ordinary F-band behaviour a decrease of the V,-type band with increasing dopa n t concentration is observed. The thermoluminescence spectra reveal the presence of two glow peaks positioned a t 363 and 453 K independently of the europium concentration. On the basis of the ITC measuremtens it is found that the number of F-centres formed does not correlate with the number of the europium dipoles destroyed by irradiation for all samples studied. Moreover, optical and thermal bleaching of color centres Fand V,-type is not accompanied by the recovery of europium dipoles. The results obtained are consistent with the previous model ascribing the decay of europium dipoles to a radiation-induced aggregation process. It is proposed that the disappearance of the V,-like band with dopant concentration is caused by the strong interaction of the europium clusters formed during irradiation with the halogen interstitials, drastically lowering the pertinent oscillator strength.
The ESR signal from I-V complexes in KCI:Eu2+ is found to decrease markedly as a result of y-irradiation and to vary swing-wise on subsequent F band bleaching at RT. The main bleaching process is explained by the superposition of Z, centre formation and the revival of I-V complexes following photostimulated recombination of F centres with I-V-trapped interstitials. Evidence seems also to be obtained for Eu+ formation at the initial bleaching stage.
