Die maximale Anwendungstemperatur der obengenannten Stähle ist abhängig von der Art der Temperaturführung. Der Stahl Cr24 verhält sich besser bei zyklischer Temperaturführung, während der Stahl Cr24Ni20 bei gleichmäßiger Temperatur günstigeres Verhalten zeigt (Versuchstemperatur 1000 und 1100°C). Die Form der Proben (zylindrische Stäbe und Würfel) übt keinen großen Einfluß auf, doch ist. die Größe der Oberfläche zu berücksichtigen, da die Zahl der Fehlstellen mil der Oberflächengröße zunimmt. Die Unterschiede im Verhalten werden im Falle des Stahles Cr24 dem katalytischen Einfluß der eisenreichen Oxide zugeschrieben, die in der chromverarmten Zone entstehen und die bei zyklischer Temperaturführung immer wieder abgestoßen werden. Im Falle des Stahles Cr24Ni20 hingegen ist das Chromcarbonitrid entscheidend, das in der chromreichen Zone entsteht und das bei kontinuierlicher Temperaturführung zerstört wird, während es sich bei der zyklischen Abkühlung stabilisiert und bei der anschließenden Erhitzung oxydationsfördernd wirkt.
An 79 schmelzen von Cr‐ und CrNi‐Stählen wurde der Verlauf der Aufkohlung in zum Zementieren unlegierter und niedriglegierter Stähle verwendeten Atmosphären untersucht. Charakteristisch ist hierbei, daß die Stähle zugleich aufgekohlt und oxydiert werden, wobei sich von der Stahlzusammensetzung abhängige charakteristische Unterschiede zeigen. Diese Unterschiede erklären sich aus der unterschiedlichen Zusammensetzung und Strucker der Oxidschichten, die primär entstehen und u. U. die Diffusion des Kohlenstoffs in das Innere des Metalls hemmen können. Manchmal kann jedoch auch unterhalb einer aufgekohlten Zone eine innere Oxydation ablaufen. Grundsätzlich günstig wirken Elemente, welche die Hitzebeständigkeit verbessern, also Ni, Si, Cr und Al, während Mn ausgeprägt ungünstig wirkt. Die in letzter Zeit beobachtete günstige Wirkung von Ti dürfte mit der kornverfeinernden Wirkung zusammenhängen.
