Acetone solutions containing 0.01% or more of juvenoids inhibit hatching when administered to freshly laid eggs of Spodoptera littoralis and Mamestra brassicae. Application of 1–100 μg of juvenoids to penultimate instar larvae of these species induces light body coloration in the last instar larvae. The effect on body coloration, however, is ambiguous in Autographa gamma. Metamorphosis is most readily inhibited by administering juvenoids within the second half of the feeding period in the last larval instar and at the start of the pupal instar. The isopropyl 11‐methoxy‐3,7,11‐trimethyl‐2,4‐dodecadienoate was the most active compound out of 32 juvenoids examined. It affected A. gamma at 0.05 μg, S. littoralis at 0.8 μg, M. brassicae at 6 μg, and Scotia ipsilon at 50 μg per specimen. The treated larvae either grow much bigger than the controls, rarely undergo an extra larval moult, and eventually they produce giant pupae (often inviable); or they develop into intermediate forms showing species specific distribution of larval and pupal features. These observations complemented with other evidence suggest that the juvenile hormone normally is involved in induction of the solitary phase in the development of certain lepidopterans as well as in the control of the length of the last larval instar and of the body size which the larvae attain before pupation.
Two juvenile hormone analogues, 6,7‐epoxygeranyl 3,4‐methylendioxyphenyl (I) and ethyl 11‐chloro‐3–7‐11‐trimethyl‐2‐dodecenoate (II) in various concentrations in acetone solution were topically administered to pupae. The lowest dose producing almost complete sterility without affecting pupal and adult development was 0.000001 μg of substance I and 0.00001 μg of substance II. These two analogues seem to be ideal chemosterilants for this species. Application of a high dose of 100 μg even to old pupae (6 days old) reduced adult longevity to 4–6 days (normally 14–16 days). A morphological effect on ovaries was noticeable on the 5th‐7th day after application. The effects of these JHA on oogenesis were noticeable in various degrees of degeneration, partial or complete resorption and atrophy of ovarioles. Compound egg chambers were often formed. Follicular cells were abnormal and scarce in many cases and proliferation took place in some of them. In some cases (compound I) the first three egg chambers were twice as large as in the control, whereas after compound II they were smaller than normal ones. Mature eggs were accumulated in the oviducts and therefore the number of eggs laid was low. The effects on treated insects varied between ovaries as well as between ovarioles in the same ovary. No stimulation of ovarian development was observed after the application of either substance I or II. Fertility was very low, in some cases nil. Both analogues, compared with classical chemosterilants, are effective in very small doses, so that they are very promising as chemosterilants of the khapra beetle.
