A presença de Haemonchus contortus e outros helmintos gastrointestinais no abomaso poderia mudar a acidez local necessária para a operação adequada de enzimas catalíticas que têm um pH ótimo extremamente baixo. O nosso objetivo foi analisar o líquido abomasal de ovelhas e comparar a intensidade do parasitismo com características físico-químicas do abomaso. A análise foi feita após o abate regular e a carga parasitária foi determinada pela coleta de vermes adultos e imaturos no conteúdo abomasal. Os resultados mostraram associações entre maiores valores de pH abomasal e maior carga parasitária. O aumento do pH abomasal pode facilitar a persistência do parasita e, portanto, a manutenção da acidez do líquido abomasal pode ser uma estratégia contra a resistência anti-helmíntica, a fim de evitar maiores perdas na produção.
