RESUMO -Dada a crescente preocupação ambiental com resíduos e ciclos de vida de produtos manufaturados, a utilização de materiais puramente sintéticos tanto em matrizes quanto em reforços vem sendo cada vez mais desestimulados no ambito dos compósitos. Amplamente utilizada como reforço de matrizes poliméricas por conta de suas propriedades excepcionais, a fibra de Sisal (Agave sisalana) é uma alternativa ecológica para substituir as cargas sintéticas. Contudo devido a sua natureza hidrofílica, é necessário se investigar alternativas que otimizam as propriedades da fibra de sisal quanto a capacidade de absorção de água, resistência mecânica e estabilidade térmica. Uma opção estudada atualmente são as modificações de superfície. Esse trabalho apresenta uma metodologia de acetilação parcial da fibra e da preparação do híbrido orgânico-inorgânico fibra de Sisal/Al2O3.nH2O. Caracterizou-se as fibras por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) com espectrometria de energia dispersiva (EDS) acoplada e quanto a capacidade de absorção de água (ASTM D570). Como resultados destaca-se a identificação da acetilação através da técnica de espectrometria com transformada de Fourier FT-IR e a constatação, através da técnica de EDS, da incorporação do alumínio da estrutura lignocelulósica. Através do teste de absorção de água, observou-se uma diminuição na capacidade de absorção de água de 28% para o compósito reforçado com o hibrido em comparação com a fibra natural.
