The spatial variability of leaf wetness duration (LWD) was evaluated in four different height-structure crop canopies: apple, coffee, maize, and grape. LWD measurements were made using painted flat plate, printed-circuit wetness sensors deployed in different positions above and inside the crops, with inclination angles ranging from 30 to 45 degrees. For apple trees, the sensors were installed in 12 east-west positions: 4 at each of the top (3.3 m), middle (2.1 m), and bottom (1.1 m) levels. For young coffee plants (80 cm tall), four sensors were installed close to the leaves at heights of 20, 40, 60, and 80 cm. For the maize and grape crops, LWD sensors were installed in two positions, one just below the canopy top and another inside the canopy. Adjacent to each experiment, LWD was measured above nearby mowed turfgrass with the same kind of flat plate sensor, deployed at 30 cm and between 30 and 45 degrees. We found average LWD varied by canopy position for apple and maize (P<0.05). In these cases, LWD was longer at the top, particularly when dew was the source of wetness. For grapes, cultivated in a hedgerow system and for young coffee plants, average LWD did not differ between the top and inside the canopy. The comparison by geometric mean regression analysis between crop and turfgrass LWD measurements showed that sensors at 30 cm over turfgrass provided quite accurate estimates of LWD at the top of the crops, despite large differences in crop height and structure, but poorer estimates for wetness within leaf canopies.
YIELD AND QUALITY COMPOSITION OF GRAPEVINES UNDER DOUBLE PRUNING AND CONTRASTING SEAZONAL MICROCLIMATEABSTRACT-In the State of São Paulo (Brazil) stands out the viticulture as an artisanal agricultural small business. In the regions of greatest clustering of vintners there is a well know rainy time frame that coincides with the period of grape growing and maturation. This contributes to drawbacks in the grape and wine quality in most of the harvestings. Nevertheless, in the same region, the time frame of autumn-winter has more favorable conditions, in this aspect, presenting a proper heat summation for grape growing and a more pronounced rainless time from April to October. An experiment was carried out in the location of Jundiai (SP) in the mid-highlands and hybrids and Vitis vinifera varieties were tested. The aim of the study was analyze the ecophysiological implication of cultivating the grapevines under double pruning through four sequential growing seasons; grape composition and yield were verified alongside with berry wet chemistry in order to check out the must quality in the contrasting time frames, winter and summer harvest. Results showed more favorable conditions for berry phenolic maturation in the autumn-winter due to a better distribution of rain as the berry set and maturation were located in the rainless period. Palavras-chave: Vitis, qualidade da uva, vinho Plant parameters and microclimatic conditions for wine grapes cultivated under sequential double pruning A B ST R A C T The wine quality depends on the quality grapes produced. Actual micrometeorological conditions occurring in the time frame of grapevine growth and development will impact berry quality, especially from berry set to the harvest. Soil-water dynamics plays an important role on the quality grape must achieved at the vinification. In the São Paulo State (Brasil) in the regions of greatest clustering of vintners, there is a marked rainy time-frame from November to February, which matches with the vine time-cycle when the majority of grape varieties are in the berry set to berry maturation bracket, which negatively affects the grape and wine quality in most of the harvests. In contrast, for the same region there is more favorable condition in the autumn/winter time, which has a promise heat summation for proper grape growing, characterized by a long time-frame of low pluviometric rate (April to October). An experiment was conducted aiming at study the cultivation o grapevines in both described "climatic windows". Physico-chemical composition of and microclimatic conditions for berry maturation during 2008 to 2010 were analysed. Results showed that the studied grape varieties developed better berry quality potential when cultivated in the autumn/winter time and this effect was more pronounced for Vitis vinifera.
