The aim of this prospective cohort study was to determine the densitometric relevance of minor design modifications of a cementless stem designed to improve proximal load transfer. We used a prospective cohort study with densitometric analysis over a five-year period of two groups of patients with primary osteoarthritis. The first group, 56 hips, received the first version of the ABG stem (ABG-I); the second group, 54 hips, had the ABG-II stem. The results obtained with the ABG-I stem showed a decrease of bone density in proximal areas that ranged from 13% to 37%. However, the new design had a decrease of the same areas that ranged from 9% to 23%. These differences were noted at the end of the first post-operative year and remained stable, except in zone 7, where they were progressive. There is little evidence that the modified stem reduces femoral bone density loss.Résumé Nous avons revu de façon rétrospective 68 hanches chez 62 patients présentant une dysplasie acétabulaire et ayant bénéficié d'une ostéotomie péri-acétabulaire. Parmi ces 68 hanches, 33 avaient en préopératoire une rétroversion acétabulaire (groupe rétroversion) et 35 une antéversion (groupe contrôle). Toutes les hanches ont été évaluées selon le score de Harris. L'évaluation radiographique de la rétroversion acétabulaire et du mur postérieur déficient ont été basées sur le signe du croisement et le signe du mur extérieur. Les scores cliniques des deux groupes au suivi final était semblable. Dans le groupe rétroversion, 12 hanches avaient antéversé leur acétabulum en post-opéra-toire le signe du mur postérieur disparaissant, mais celui-ci restant présent dans 21 hanches avec un acétabulum en rétroversion post-opératoire. Parmi les 21 hanches avec acétabulum rétroversé une coxarthrose postérieure s'est développée à 5 ans post-opératoire. Lorsque l'on réalise une correction par ostéotomie pour une hanche dysplasique avec un acétabulum rétroversé, il est important de corriger cette rétroversion de façon à prévenir une coxarthrose secondaire due à la déficience du mur postérieur.

Cigarette butts are one of the most common types of litter all around the world. This waste when disposed of in the environment pose a major threat to living organisms and ecosystem health. Cigarette butts are mainly made of cellulose acetate (2.45 substitution) that biodegrades slowly and can take up to 18 months to break down under normal litter conditions. Cellulose acetate is a valuable polymer that can be used for a great variety of applications. In this communication, we present the results from an ongoing study addressed to value cigarette butt waste based on the recovery of the cellulose acetate by a methodology that includes several solid-liquid extractions and a chemical precipitation. For that purpose three samples of cigarette butts were prepared and they were extracted with 5% (w/v) NaCl aqueous solution, 5% (w/v) NaAc aqueous solution or 0,02% (w/v) H2SO4 aqueous solution. After that, they were further extracted with absolute ethanol and diethyl ether. The cleaned butts were suspended in acetone and distilled water was added until a white precipitate of cellulose acetate was formed. Cellulose acetate was characterised by FTIR-ATR and its melting point. Extracts were analized by ICP-MS and GC-MS.

We reviewed 32 patients who all had knee arthrodesis performed after failed knee replacement. The minimum clinical follow-up was 1 year. The arthrodesis was performed by means of the Wichita fusion nail in 11, by external fixation in 15 cases, by plating in three and by intramedullary nailing in three. The mean patient age was 68.6 years. When the Wichita nail was used, fusion was achieved in ten out of 11 cases after a mean period of 4.5 (3-7) months. This study was performed on 13 professional race-cyclists to examine changes in sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and serum lipid concentrations after training and after competition. While SHBG, total cholesterol and phospholipids increased and free fatty acids (FFA) decreased significantly during training, HDL-C and FFA increased and SHBG and triglycerides (TG) decreased significantly during the competition period. These latter changes in serum lipids and lipoproteins were assumed to be a direct effect of utilisation of muscle and plasma TG as fuels for exertion occurring only in extreme exercise. Changes in SHBG concentrations indicated that they were dependent on the conditions of the physical effort and could be related not only to the concentrations of androgens but also to the reduction in body mass.
