The "Ayvalik" olive cultivar, the most grown for high quality olive oil in Turkey, is generally regarded as showing very good rooting ability. However, cuttings sometimes show moderate or even poor rooting performances, a problem likely related to the use of inappropriate rooting media. The aim of this work was to determine the most successful media among those traditionally used and to identify promising alternatives. October cuttings were planted in 25 different media in two consecutive years under mist propagation conditions. Substrates such as peat, perlite, bark, pumice, sand, polystyrene beads, phenolic foam, rockwool and vermiculite were used pure or in mixtures. In the first year the highest rooting percentage (100%) and visual rating scores (5) were obtained with phenolformaldehyde foam. Perlite-vermiculite (1:1 v/v) was associated with a 95% rooting percentage in both years. The highest mean number of roots (10.8), root length (47 mm), root dry (382 mg) and fresh weights (48.3 mg), and number of secondary roots (13) were recorded in the same medium in the second year. Rockwool, peat-polystyrene (2:1 v/v) and sand-perlite (1:2 v/v) also led to more than 90% of cuttings taking root, while pure sand, peat and peat-sand mixtures gave very low (5-28%) rooting percentages. Perlite-vermiculite 1:1 (v/v) and pre-sized rockwool cubes may be appropriate alternatives to traditional sand-perlite mixtures for rooting "Ayvalik" olive cuttings.

Objective: Ramsey (Vitis champinii) is a grapevine rootstock that preferred sandy soils and it has high resistance to phylloxera and nematodes. But rooting of one year-old wood cuttings of this rootstock is quite low. In this study, determination of the effects of two different pre-sized rooting blocks (paper pot and phenolic foam) injected with different IBA concentrations on rooting of Ramsey rootstock cuttings were aimed. Material and Methods: In this study, for supporting the exogenous auxin treatment, IBA in different concentrations (0-50 ppm) was applied to two different pre-sized rooting media blocks (paper pot and phenolic foam) in which Ramsey cuttings be rooted. IBA solutions were injected into rooting blocks before planting. Cuttings were also pretreated with 2000 ppm IBA as quick dip. Cuttings were evaluated after 45 days in relation with root and shoot quality parameters. Results: The effects of rooting blocks on root number, root length, shoot length and dry root weight were found statistically significant. Apart from rooting percentage, other quality parameters of cuttings that planted in paper pots were higher than that planted in phenolic foam. The highest rooting percentage (43.2 %) was obtained from cuttings that planted in phenolic foam, injected in 30 ppm IBA. Conclusion: In this study, it was revealed that paper pot could be a proper medium choice in grapevine nursery tree propagation. ÖZ Amaç: Ramsey (Vitis champinii) kumlu toprakları tercih eden bir asma anacı olup, floksera ve nematodlara karşı yüksek dayanıklılığa sahiptir. Ancak bu anacın bir yıllık odun çeliklerinin köklenmesi oldukça düşük düzeydedir. Bu çalışmada, farklı ön boyutlandırılmış köklendirme bloklarına (kağıt saksı ve fenolik köpük) enjekte edilen farklı konsantrasyonlardaki IBA'nın Ramsey asma anacı çeliklerinin köklenmesi üzerine etkilerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Materyal ve Metot: Bu çalışmada, Ramsey çeliklerinin köklendirileceği iki farklı ön boyutlandırılmış köklendirme ortam bloğuna (kağıt saksı ve fenolik köpük) dışarıdan uygulanan oksini desteklemek amacıyla, farklı konsantrasyonlarda (0-50 ppm) IBA uygulanmıştır. IBA çözeltileri dikimden önce köklendirme bloklarına enjekte edilmiştir. Çeliklere ayrıca hızlı daldırma yöntemiyle 2000 ppm IBA uygulanmıştır. Çelikler 45 gün sonra kök ve sürgün kalite parametreleri açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Köklendirme bloklarının ortalama kök sayısı, kök uzunluğu, sürgün uzunluğu ve kök kuru ağırlığı üzerine etkisi istatistiki açıdan önemli bulunmuştur. Köklenme oranı dışındaki diğer kalite parametreleri, kağıt saksıya dikilen çeliklerde fenolik köpüğe dikilenlere kıyasla daha yüksek olmuştur. En yüksek köklenme oranı (% 43.2), 30 ppm IBA enjekte edilen fenolik köpük ortamına dikilen çeliklerden elde edilmiştir. Sonuç: Bu çalışmada, kağıt saksının asma fidanı üretiminde uygun bir ortam seçeneği olabileceği ortaya konulmuştur.

Zeytini ve Uslu zeytin çeşitlerinin tohumlarından elde edilmektedir. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye'nin farklı bölgelerine ait zeytin çeşitlerinden daha üstün nitelikli yeni çöğür anacı adaylarının saptanması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla zeytin çekirdeklerinin çimlenmesini kolaylaştırıcı ön uygulamalar araştırılmıştır. Çalışmanın ikinci aşamasında, elde edilen çöğürlerin üzerine Domat çeşidi aşılanarak, aşı başarısı saptanmıştır. Kimyasal aşındırma uygulamaları zeytin çekirdeklerinin çimlenmelerini, kontrole göre %10-33 arasında değişen oranlarda artırmıştır. %3 NaOH uygulaması çimlenme oranlarını arttırırken, saf H₂SO₄ çimlenmeyi azaltmıştır. Çeşit ve uygulamalara bağlı olarak çimlenme oranları %5.8-76.4 arasında değişmiştir. Bu çalışma ile tescil edilmiş anaçların yanı sıra, denenen Çekişte, Edincik Su ve Yağ Çelebi gibi diğer bazı çeşitlerin de yeterli oranlarda çimlendikleri saptanmıştır. Aşı başarısı açısından, çekirdeklerinin çimlenme oranı yüksek bazı çeşitlerin, aşı tutma oranları düşük olmuştur. En yüksek aşı tutma oranı (%70) Marantelli çöğürlerinde gözlenirken, en düşük oran (%23.3) Yağ Çelebi'de saptanmıştır. En uzun sürgün (43.4 cm) Girit Zeytininde ölçülmüştür. Özellikle Gemlik, Sarı Ulak ve Sinop no 1'de düşük sürgün uzunluğu değerlerinin (25.1-27.4 cm) saptanması nedeniyle, bunların üzerlerine aşılanan çeşitlerde belli oranda bodurluk sağlayabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır.

‘Gemlik’ olive variety started to be grown in many areas of Turkey in recent years. ‘Gemlik’ is mainly a black table variety, but it is processed to oil in many areas.  So chemical fruit thinning may be useful to control alternate bearing and standardization of the fruit and consequently the oil quality. In this work, predicting the effects of chemical fruit thinning by potassium salt of naphtaleneacetic acid (NAA-K) on oil yield and quality in ‘Gemlik’, which is one of the prominent olive variety of Turkey was aimed. Results showed that NAA applications decreased the oil acidity levels in the first year (off year). In the second year (on year), NAA sprayings at 100 and 120 ppm increased the oil acidity up to 1.75 % while 150 ppm decreased the acidity value to 0.36 %. 180 ppm NAA significantly augmented the oil content of olive fruits particularly in “on year” and gave rise to 22 and 48 % increments in oil rates successively on fresh and dry matter basis compared to control.

The wild olive (O. europaea L. subsp. oleaster) is widely distributed along the coastal zones of Anatolia (Asia Minor). The Aegean Region (Western Anatolia) in particular has a rich olive population, including genuine wild individuals as well as feral forms. Oleaster olives in situ, which have diverse morphological and pomological characteristics, differ from cultivated olives. The ripe olive fruit has a purple-black color because of the accumulation of anthocyanin. As in cultivated olives, the yellow color in ripe fruits of the oleaster olive is unusual. This yellow color in ripe fruits of oleaster olives has not been reported so far. Thus it is potentially significant for further breeding strategies. This paper assesses the morphological characteristics of two oleaster ecotypes (YO1 and YO2) with yellow fruits that were coincidentally located in the Đzmir Province. Significant differences are found between the two ecotypes both in terms of their quantitative characteristics as well as the oil content of their fruit. Fruit weight (1.2 g), length (15.5 mm), width (11.2 mm) and percentage of oil in dry weight (15.7%) are significantly higher in YO1. Apart from the differences between the quantitative stone characteristics, the stone morphology and surface texture are also considerably different. Besides potential agronomic considerations, they both have high potential for use as ornamental trees.
