Antegrade, minimally invasive, elastic stable intramedullary nailing of short metatarsal shaft and neck fractures using titanium nails (TEN) is a safe surgical procedure and achieves primary functional stability. It reliably leads to fracture healing and produces good functional results.
Complications such as breaking of the k‑wires, breaking of the chisel or extraction of adhering bone tissue occurred in 14 of the 64 (21.9%) explanted FlexTack implants. Complication-free removal using the original instruments provided by the manufacturer was possible for five implants. The modified explantation procedure as described above was applied in 45 explanted implants (70.3%) with complete removal of the implant without further complications within the follow up period.
Between January 2007 and December 2012, ankle arthrodesis was performed in 9 patients with failed TAR (6 men and 3 women, mean age 56.4 ± 7.0 years, range 47.8-66.0 years). The mean time between the initial TAR and revision surgery was 4.5 ± 2.4 years (range 1.2-7.9 years). In one patient irrigation and debridement was performed due to superficial wound infection. Another patient had a delayed osseous healing 11 months after the revision surgery.
