Abstract— In this paper, an active backlight control technology and a data‐processing algorithm has been developed to improve the image quality in IPS‐mode LCD TVs. The image‐blinking problem caused by repeatedly abrupt changes in the backlight luminance was solved by using algorithms [Fba (flexible‐boundary algorithm) and Cfa (cumulative feedback algorithm)] and an optimized number of backlight dimming steps based on human perception. In the IPS‐mode 42‐in. TFT‐LCD panel, the dynamic contrast ratio can be more than twice the typical level by means of a lower black luminance and a higher white luminance. Additionally, the power consumption and LCD temperature were lowered.
Multi‐touch function is integrated with a 52″ LCM. IR image sensors detect touches around normal panel. A few IR image sensors are placed to detect touches. Triangulation, image processing technology and pattern recognition are used for touch algorithm. Positions of touch points are calculated simultaneously by using IR image sensors, IR light sources and a LCD panel. The number of touches and its area is used to perform multi‐touch functions. Multi‐touch LCD can also detect human gestures. At this work, map searching program is used for touch and gesture recognition. As a result, multi‐touch LCD shows its usefulness and it can replace conventional HCI device (mouse, keyboard).
We achieved over 1000:1 of dynamic Contrast ratio for IPS mode LCD TV by the ADIC (Adaptive Dynamic Image Control) technology. The ADIC technology comprises backlight modulation and data stretch after input image analysis in order to improve the image quality.
