The requirement for a rational engineering approach to constructing structures using undensified hydraulic sand fill has identified several deficiencies in current technology. In particular, there is no single parameter measure of sand behaviour. This Paper presents an appropriate physical parameter, termed the state parameter, that combines the influence of void ratio and stress level with reference to an ultimate (steady) state to describe sand behaviour. Data from a triaxial testing programme on Kogyuk sand with four fines contents is presented and the significant engineering design parameters are demonstrated to be dependent on the state parameter. The concept of state is a fundamental physical concept and has wide applicability both as an empirical normalizing parameter and for constitutive modelling of soil behaviour.
There is conflicting evidence regarding the critical state and steady state of sands. It seems that in some cases the critical state and steady state are taken to be equal and in others they differ significantly. The steady state is shown to be dependent on stress path, initial fabric and initial density in some cases and not in others. This Paper examines a fine to medium, uniformly graded quartzitic sand. The critical and steady states are shown to be equal and independent of stress path, sample preparation method and initial density. Data suggest that the critical state friction angle in sands may be a function of the critical state void ratio. The steady/critical state line is shown to be non-linear, and to have a marked increase in slope at stress levels greater than about 1000 kPa. The critical or steady state point must be selected from triaxial test data with care to ensure that pseudo-steady states are not compared with true steady states. Test procedures and the intrinsic properties of the material being tested must be controlled well. The overall scatter in the steady/critical state line for the sand studied is ± 0·01 in terms of void ratio at stress levels less than 1000 kPa. For real sands with variable intrinsic properties, the scatter may be much larger.
A generalized Cambridge-type constitutive model for sand is developed from the fundamental axioms of critical state theory. An infinity of normal consolidation loci for sand prevents the direct coupling of yield surface size (hardness) to void ratio. Therefore, the second axiom of critical state theory is used as the basis of an incremental hardening rule by defining an image of the critical state on the yield surface and requiring that the image state become critical with shear strain. The proposed representation of sand behaviour has the attribute of normality and yet realistic dilation rates are obtained; this duality is achieved by defining limiting hardening loci proportional to the state parameter \|> at the image stress. A range of models can be developed within the general scheme. A simple rigid-plastic variant is presented and shown to capture the constitutive behaviour of sand in drained triaxial tests; a single set of material parameters models sand behaviour regardless of initial density or confining stress, initial density being introduced through \|/. The approach is not limited to dilatant (dry) soils and smoothly represents soil behaviour from very loose to very dense states. The simple rigid-plastic model is called Nor-Sand and requires two additional parameters to the normal suite for a critical state model. Nor-Sand appears to meet the need for a simple and enlightening representation of sand.
A method of interpreting conventional oedometer test data using work per unit volume as a criterion for determining both in situ effective and yield stresses in clay is presented. This technique was applied to the results of oedometer tests carried out on samples of natural clay deposits and on specimens consolidated anisotropically from a sluny to a known effective stress state. The work per unit volume -effective stress relationship, using arithmetic scales, can be approximated or fitted using linear relationships. The intersections of these fitted lines are demonstrated to provide accurate values for in situ current and yield (preconsolidation) stresses. The yield stress is defined as the intersection of the initial fitted line and the linear relationship observed at higher stresses. The current effective stress is indicated by the first significant divergence of the data from the initial fitted line. These relationships apply to both conventionally (horizontally) trimmed specimens and to vertically trimmed oedometer samples. It is hypothesized that the in situ effective and yield stresses (in both the vertical and horizontal directions) in a natural clay can be determined by the work per unit volume interpretation of oedometer tests carried out on horizontally and vertically trimmed specimens.
