RESUMEN: El número de curva es uno de los parámetros más utilizados en INTRODUCCIÓNUno de los componentes del ciclo hidrológico que resulta más difícil de analizar es el de la infiltración. La infiltración es el proceso por el que la precipitación penetra a través de la superficie del suelo y aumenta la humedad del suelo. Entre los métodos más extendidos para su estimación está el del parámetro del número de curva, del Soil Conservation Service (SCS) de los EE.UU (McCuen, 1982; Ferrer y otros, 1995). En el presente estudio se ha trabajado con una adaptación desarrollada por Témez (1987) en España de dicho método, el cual se define por cinco variables: el uso del suelo, el tipo de práctica con la que se cultiva, la pendiente del terreno, el tipo de suelo, categorizado según su facilidad de drenaje, y las condiciones de humedad del suelo. Tomando estas condiciones como medias, y basándose en que en la mayoría del territorio español se cultiva siempre siguiendo la máxima pendiente, la determinación del número de curva se basa en tres pará-metros físicos: la pendiente, el tipo de suelo (definido en base a su textura) y los usos de suelo. Hasta hace poco, las fuentes de información con las que se contaban para obtener estos datos se reducían a cartografía analógica que en la mayoría de los casos no estaba actualizada. Durante los últimos años, se han desarrollado nuevas tecnologías como son los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) y la teledetección, que permiten tener actualizada la información necesaria para definir el número de curva y facilitar la combinación de información espacial (Ferrer y otros, 1995). El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar las ventajas que presenta la teledetección frente a la cartografía temática convencional. Se entiende como teledetección, en sentido amplio, a la recogida e interpretación de datos sobre un objetivo a distancia, desde aviones o satélites, y se restringe a los métodos que detectan energía electromagnética (p.e. fotografías aéreas, imágenes de satélite, ...). Sin embargo, en este artículo, se utilizará para referirse a la teledetección espacial, es decir, a aquella técnica que permite adquirir imágenes de la superficie terrestre desde sensores instalados en plataformas espaciales (Chuvieco, 1996). Existen dos tipos de sensores: pasivos y activos. En los primeros (que son los utilizados para el presente artículo), su función es medir la parte de energía reflejada y/o emitida por los cuerpos terrestres o por las nubes. Según el tipo de sensor, se detecta la energía correspondiente a un intervalo (banda) de longitud de onda del espectro u otro, siendo esta variedad juntamente con la resolución espacial y temporal las características que harán que un sensor sea más aplicable a un campo de la ciencia u a otro. Como resolución espacial se entiende al tamaño del pixel, es decir, del área mínima de información de la superficie terrestre que refleja la energía.
