This chapter evaluated the potentials of selected information and communication technologies in adult education programmes in Nigeria. Infrastructure and funding are among the important issues, but scepticism about the pedagogic value of information and communication technologies and staff development are probably the most challenging. Institutions are grappling with bringing use and funding of e-learning and other computer-based instructional strategies into the mainstream of their organizations, and are beginning to contemplate restructuring to take account of information and communication technologies, in terms of staffing, staff development, course design and student support. Even though studies have captured the imperatives of information and communication technologies in Nigeria's educational system, little is still known about the subject matter in relation to adult education systems in the country. Consequently, this chapter explores and provides the much-needed insight on the subject and the issues that the process raises in the context of adult education in Nigeria.
This study examined trado-modern communication strategies for effective implementation of community development programmes in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Two objectives and two research questions guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey and exploratory research designs. 405 respondents were adopted as sample size through total enumeration sampling. A structured questionnaire titled “Trado-Modern Communication Strategies for Effective Implementation of Community Development Programmes” (QT-MCSIECDP) with r = 0.82 was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by experts from the Department of Adult and Non-Formal Education in the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Data were analysed using frequency, percentage and mean statistics. Results show that traditional rulers, groups, town-criers, face-to-face interaction and village squares are the available trado-modern communication channels for effective implementation of community development programmes in Bayelsa State; trado-modern communication keeps the communities up-to-date and enables individuals to react knowledgeably and intelligently to the environment, communicates feelings, creates acceptable changes in behaviour, boosts information, shows ways to solve problems and further growth for effective implementation of community development programmes in Bayelsa State. The study recommended among others that traditional rulers, town-criers, groups, village square and face-to-face interaction should always be used to inform, convince and motivate the community citizens for effective implementation of community development programmes.
Exploration activities of Oil companies in most communities in Nigeria have negatively impacted on the environment where they are performing their business activities without adequate compensation to the community people. Such negative impacts include; gas flaring, oil spillages, noise and air pollution and so on and these affect the flora and fauna. Even whem compensations are paid, they are not commensurate to the damage and this result in communal conflicts, overheated and prolonged agitations, frustrations, loss of lives and properties and consequently unhealthy relationship between the oil companies and their host communities. This is basically as a result of community people possessing little or no awareness of the terms of the corporate social responsibility to be performed by all participating stakeholders especially the oil companies. This paper therefore examines how capacity building programmes can be employed as a means to equipping and increasing the awareness of community people with necessary information on corporate social responsibility of oil companies for sustainable community development in Nigeria. Some of such programmes include adult literacy education, extension education, conferences, seminars, talk shows, education consultancy just to mention a few. The paper therefore suggests that community members should be adequately informed on existing aspects of the corporate social responsibilities of oil companies operating in their locality and that these oil companies perform their corporate social responsibility to their host communities effectively in order to foster sustainable community development.
Asset based community development (ABCD) is a shift and direct contrast to the conversional need-based community development (NBD). It focuses on community asset as useful tool to stir up the development of a community. It is concerned with what is available in the community that could be used to development as against dependence on outsiders or expert for development. The different types of asset in communities were enumerated. The benefits and criticisms against the approach were also highlighted. A model to guide the application of the approach was designed. The paper is of the view that every development intervention in the nation should have its root on asset-based development approach.
