Leaf blight, caused by Curvularia eragrostidis, is the major foliar disease of yam in the Brazilian Northeast. Optimum sample size were determined in 15 commercial yam (cv. Da Costa) areas, located at Zona da Mata, Pernambuco State, Northeast of Brazil, aiming to orientate the disease assessment of yam leaf blight in field conditions. Disease severity was assessed in 100 plants by field in extracts of 5, 15, and 30 leaves by plant. The data set from each area were analyzed by a method that specified the level of acceptable error, determined Summa Phytopathologica, v.34, n.2, p.189-191, 2008 Palavras-chave adicionais: Dioscorea cayennensis, Curvularia eragrostidis, amostragem, quantificação de doença, epidemiologia. doença variou entre 0,41 a 22,34% e foi correlacionada negativamente (P=0,05) com o tamanho da amostra. The disease severity ranged between 0.41 and 22.34% and was negatively correlated (P=0.05) with the sample size. The increase of 15 to 30 leaves sampled for plant result small reduction in the total number of plants to be sampled differing of the observed when the increase was from 5 to 15 leaves. Based on data set and considering 10% of acceptable error, future surveys of yam leaf blight severity in Northeast fields should analyze 37 plants/ha and 15 leaves/plant. Meyer [teleomorfo Cochliobolus eragrostidis Tsuda & Ueyama], é a principal doença foliar do inhame (Dioscorea cayennensis Lam.) no Nordeste brasileiro.

Summary Meloidogyne spp. and Pratylenchus spp. are the most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes to sugarcane and the knowledge of soil characteristics that influence the occurrence of these pathogens can be useful in their management. With the objective to investigate the relationships between soil variables and populations of Meloidogyne spp. and Pratylenchus spp. in sugarcane fields, root-zone soil and root samples were collected from 20 farms located in 16 municipalities in Alagoas state, Brazil. The multivariate regression tree technique was used to model the population density’s response variables for Meloidogyne spp. and Pratylenchus spp. in the root-zone soil and the roots according to sugarcane cultivars, soil organic matter, and soil chemical and physical variables. The results showed the existence of associations between soil factors, sugarcane cultivars and populations of nematodes. Root samples from soils with K > 37.79 mmolc dm−3, Al < 5.93 mmolc dm−3 and sugarcane ‘RB92579’, ‘SP753046’, ‘SP813250’ and ‘SP921631’ showed the lowest Pratylenchus spp. population densities. However, the lowest densities in the root-zone were found in soils with sum of bases > 1.91 mmolc dm−3, Ca:Mg ratio < 1:2 and soil organic matter < 10.7 g dm−3. The lowest population densities of Meloidogyne spp. in roots were associated with sugarcane ‘RB92579’, ‘RB93509’, ‘RB98710’, ‘SP791011’ and ‘SP921631’ and soil aggregate mean diam. > 0.48 mm, while root-zone densities were minimum in soils with P > 28.59 mg dm−3. This information should support further studies to investigate the effect of each variable on populations of Pratylenchus and Meloidogyne.
The objective of this study was to accomplish a survey on populations of Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus species in sugarcane farming areas in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. Twenty samples of soil and roots were processed to extract and quantify nematodes; however, the identification of Meloidogyne species was performed using only 12 samples. Pratylenchus spp. were reported at moderate population levels of 68-1556 specimens 50g-1 of roots and 2-298 specimens 100cm-3 of soil in twenty analyzed samples. For Meloidogyne spp., these values were of 12-487 specimens 50g-1 of roots and 0-140 specimens 100cm-3 of soil. Based on electrophoresis of esterase isozymes, M. incognita was reported to be the most frequent species, followed by M. javanica and M. arenaria. Pratylenchus species identified through morphometrical and morphological characteristics were P. zeae and P. brachyurus , with predominance for the first species. No significant correlation (P≤0.05) were reported between nematode populations and sugarcane cropping systems.
