The electronic structure and chemical bonding of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) and B12-derivative (methylcobalamin) are studied by means of X-ray emission (XES) and photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy. The obtained results are compared with ab initio electronic structure calculations using the orthogonalized linear combination of the atomic orbital method (OLCAO). We show that the chemical bonding in vitamin B12 is characterized by the strong Co-C bond and relatively weak axial Co-N bond. It is further confirmed that the Co-C bond in cyanocobalamin is stronger than that of methylcobalamin resulting in their different biological activity.
The results of x-ray fluorescence measurements of thiophenes ͓regioregular poly ͑3-hexylthiophene ͑P3HT͒ and ␣,-dihexylquaterthiophene ͑DH␣4T͔͒ and phtalocyanines ͓copper phtalocyanine ͑CuPc͒ and copper hexadecafluorophtalocyanine (F 16 CuPc)͔ are presented. Experimental carbon, nitrogen, fluorine K␣ and sulphur, copper L 2,3 x-ray emission spectra are compared with ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy spectra and deMon density-functional theory calculations of model molecules. We find that the carbon K␣ emission is almost identical for P3HT and DH␣4T. This indicates that the electronic structure of the system is not affected by the presence of the side group. The ratio of emission intensities of the Cu L 2 to Cu L 3 intensities is found to be smaller by a factor of 2 for CuPc and F 16 CuPc than it is for pure metal. This demonstrates the strong covalency in phalocyanines.
Self-assembled monolayer films based on iodobenzoyloxy-functionalized resorc[4]arenes were prepared on gold substrates to serve as model systems for future time-resolved studies of molecular recognition, a mechanism of outstanding importance in bioorganic systems. The film properties were tested using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and imaging ellipsometry. An apparatus for time-resolved electron spectroscopy utilizing femtosecond soft X-ray pulses is capable of detecting iodine core-level photolines and the photoinduced dissociation after ultraviolet illumination. The developed technique holds promise for tracking the temporal evolution of chemical shifts of atomic markers as local probes for the dynamics of the guest-host interaction.
