The post-middle Miocene evolution of sedimentary patterns in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean has been deduced from a compilation and synthesis of CaCO 3 , opal, and nannofossil assemblage data from 11 sites drilled during Leg 138. Improvements in stratigraphic correlation and time scale development enabled the construction of lithostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic frameworks of exceptional quality. These frameworks, and the high sedimentation rates (often exceeding 4 cm/k.y.) provided a detailed and synoptic paleoceanographic view of a large and highly productive region. The three highlights that emerge are: (1) a middle late Miocene "carbonate crash" (Lyle et al., this volume); (2) a late Miocene-early Pliocene "biogenic bloom"; and (3) an early Pliocene "opal shift". During the carbonate crash, an interval of dissolution extending from-11.2 to 7.5 Ma, CaCO 3 accumulation rates declined to near zero over much of the eastern equatorial Pacific, whereas opal accumulation rates remained substantially unchanged. The crash nadir, near 9.5 Ma, was marked by a brief shoaling of the regional carbonate compensation depth by more than 1400 m. The carbonate crash has been correlated over the entire tropical Pacific Ocean, and has been attributed to tectonically-induced changes in abyssal flow through the Panamanian seaway. The biogenic bloom extended from 6.7 to 4.5 Ma, and was characterized by an overall increase in biogenic accumulation and by a steepening of the latitudinal accumulation gradient toward the equator. The bloom has been observed over a large portion of the global ocean and has been linked to increased productivity. The final highlight, is a distinct and permanent shift in the locus of maximum opal mass accumulation rate at 4.4 Ma. This shift was temporally, and perhaps causally, linked to the final closure of the Panamanian seaway. Before 4.4 Ma, opal accumulation was greatest in the eastern equatorial Pacific Basin (near 0°N, 107°W). Since then, the highest opal fluxes in the equatorial Pacific have occurred in the Galapagos region (near 3°S, 92°W).
A two-dimensional acoustic waveguide of infinite extent described by two parallel lines contains an obstruction of fairly general shape which is symmetric about the centreline of the waveguide. It is proved that there exists at least one mode of oscillation, antisymmetric about the centreline, that corresponds to a local oscillation at a particular frequency, in the absence of excitation, which decays with distance down the waveguide away from the obstruction. Mathematically, this trapped mode is related to an eigenvalue of the Laplace operator in the waveguide. The proof makes use of an extension of the idea of the Rayleight quotient to characterize the lowest eigenvalue of a differential operator on an infinite domain.
G. 1999 (March): Clay-mineral distribution in surface sediments of the Eurasian kctic Ocean and continental margin as indicator for source areas and transport pathwaysa synthesis. Boreas, Vol. 28, pp. 215-233. Oslo. ISSN 0300-9483. Clay-mineral distributions in the Arctic Ocean and the adjacent Eurasian shelf areas are discussed to identify source areas and transport pathways of terrigenous material in the Arctic Ocean. The main clay minerals in Eurasian Arctic Ocean sediments are illite and chlorite. Smectite and kaolinite occur in minor amounts in these sediments, but show strong variations in the shelf areas. These two minerals are therefore reliable in reconstructions of source areas of sediments from the Eurasian Arctic. The Kara Sea and the western part of the Laptev Sea are enriched in smectite, with highest values of up to 70% in the deltas of the Ob and Yenisey rivers. Illite is the dominant clay mineral in all the investigated sediments except for parts of the Kara Sea.The highest concentrations with more than 70% illite occur in the East Siberian Sea and around Svalbard. Chlorite represents the clay mineral with lowest concentration changes in the Eastern Arctic, ranging between 10 and 25%. The main source areas for kaolinite in the Eurasian Arctic are Mesozoic sedimentary rocks on Franz-Josef Land islands. Based on clay-mineral data, transport of the clay fraction via sea ice is of minor importance for the modern sedimentary budget in the Arctic basins.
We consider the phenomenon of spectral pollution arising in calculation of spectra of self-adjoint operators by projection methods. We suggest a strategy of dealing with spectral pollution by using the socalled second order relative spectra. The effectiveness of the method is illustrated by a detailed analysis of two model examples.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the principal eigenvalue of a Robin (or generalised Neumann) problem with a large parameter in the boundary condition for the Laplacian in a piecewise smooth domain. We show that the leading asymptotic term depends only on the singularities of the boundary of the domain, and give either explicit expressions or two-sided estimates for this term in a variety of situations.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
