A national mail survey of 176 employed persons who are blind or have low vision found that employment barriers included attitudes of employers and the general public; transportation problems; and lack of access to print, adaptive equipment, and accommodations. This study of the transition experiences of 102 college students with visual impairments (including students who are blind and students with low vision) and of the services offered for students with disabilities at 66 colleges found that the colleges provided most of the services students need to be successful. The students also described the numerous areas for which visually impaired high school students should prepare before they enter college and the skills they should develop or hone.
The problems of 12 young people aged 19–27 who were visually impaired and moving from school to work were examined to identify services provided by an educationally based and a rehabilitation-based transition program. Eighteen services were identified, and no major differences were found in the types of services which differed only according to the youths’ secondary disabilities.
