This article gives the philosophy behind the formation of the Education Team in a geriatric service and lists its specific objectives. The latter include the development and evaluation of educational programmes, the establishment of an information centre, clinical teaching, the orientation of new staff and in-service training, an advisory service, and the evaluation of equipment. The elderly population in this region is already higher than the national average and the team promotes positive attitudes in their care. The authors consider that the role and workload of the team will' continue to expand in the foreseeable future.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVESThe specific objectives of the team are as follows.
Development and evaluation of educational programmesThese programmes vary in length and content, depending on the need and level of the students. However, certain major concepts are inherent within all of them, namely a problemsolving approach to patient care; enablement of patients by a method of management; the multidisciplinary team approach; and individual needs and flexibility. We teach these concepts on a regular basis to the following groups.which allow for generalization of knowledge is essential. Inherent in creativity is the provision of meaningful clinical experiences and application of knowledge based on a concept of the total learning process which should be designed to fulfil the desired behavioural outcomes and foster self-actualization of individual students and patients.'If we, as educators, accept this philosophy, we must equip our students in skills which include those of the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domain.'The Education Team has two broad aims: 1. To teach the desired concepts and principles of geriatric rehabilitation and gerontological nursing so that application of theory can be generalized over a wide variety of practical situations. 2. To function as a health service (that is, in teaching geriatric management and special skills), being based at William Lyne and serving our own hospital, other hospitals, nursing homes, and institutions within the Hunter Health Region.
