A simple hydrothermal self-assembly method was adopted to grow a newly reported superhydrophobic reticulate ZnO film with papillary nodes. The formation mechanism has also been explained by the tension junction model. This structure can extremely enhance the dewettability for the surface modification with low-surface-energy materials such as long chain fluorinated organic compounds. The surfaces of the ZnO thin film were superhydrophobic with a contact angle (CA) of 170 degrees +/- 1 degrees, while the sliding angle (SA) is 2 degrees. The samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM).
We demonstrate a broadband visible-light absorber based on excitation of multiple propagating surface plasmon (PSP) resonances. The simple structure is constructed of continuous gold/silica multi-layers covered by a one-dimensional gold grating. The broadening of bandwidth arises from the inter-layer hybridization and spectral superposition of PSPs, which is predicted with the analytical coupled oscillator model and validated using the RCWA simulation. The average absorption increases with the number of gold/silica pairs and exceeds 95% over the whole visible spectrum when only five pairs are included. Moreover, results show that the absorption can be further enhanced by grading the thickness of silica layers. The presented design might enable promising applications in the fields of photovoltaic cells and thermal emitters, owing to its advantages of wideband, near-unity absorption and simple fabrication simultaneously.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is clinically characterized by neonatal respiratory distress, chronic sinusitis, bronchiectasis and infertility, and situs inversus in 50% of the patients. PCD is a result of mutations in genes encoding proteins involved in ciliary function, and is primarily inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Diagnosis of PCD is often a challenging task due to its high clinical and genetic heterogeneities. In the present study, we attempted to use whole-exome sequencing (WES) combined with runs of homozygosity (ROH) approaches to identify the genetic defects in four Chinese consanguineous families with clinical PCD. We successfully identified three recently acknowledged PCD genes: DYX1C1, CCNO and ARMC4, and one well-characterized PCD gene, DNAI1. Our study provides compelling evidence that WES in combination with ROH analysis is an efficient diagnostic tool for identifying genetic causes of PCD in consanguineous families. Furthermore, our work expands the genetic mutation spectrum in PCD, and provides the additional tools to better serve the counseling of the families with PCD.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
