INTRODUÇÃO: Segundo a OMS obesidade pode ser definida como um individuo que possui IMC (índice de massa corporal) igual ou superior a 30 kg/m², ele é obtido através da razão entre peso corporal e altura em metros, pessoas que sofrem de obesidade possuem um acúmulo excessivo de gordura que leva a um aumento de risco a outras doenças como, problemas cardiovasculares, diabetes, hipertensão e atualmente maior risco de óbito por covid-19. Em relação a doença periodontal, alguns estudos mostram que indivíduos obesos tendem a ter maior risco a doença periodontal, tanto por aumento de citocinas pró-inflamatórias como por baixa resistência imunológica. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a correlação entre obesidade e a doença periodontal, através de uma revisão de literatura. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: A busca foi feita através dos bancos de dados PubMed, BVS, Google Acadêmico, com prioridade para artigos dos últimos 10 anos e utilizando os descritores “obesity”, “periodontitis” e “periodontal desease”. Foram encontrados 19 artigos, selecionando os ensaios clínicos, totalizando 7 artigos. DISCUSSÃO/RESULTADOS: 1 artigo falava sobre obesidade na infância e adolescência, com pacientes de 11 a 18 anos e foi constatado que adolescentes obesos tinham maiores índices de acúmulo de placa, gengivite e bolsas periodontais. Outros 2 estudos feitos em idosos, onde foram analisados que nesse grupo, a obesidade foi associada com periodontite de baixo limiar e que indivíduos sedentários com baixa aptidão cardiorrespiratória também tinham associação com periodontite moderada e grave. 1 outro estudo citava que indivíduos magros e com altos níveis de aptidão física, tiveram um risco significativamente menor a periodontite grave. 1 artigo de um estudo feito na Jordânia com pessoa de 18 a 70 anos identificou que em sua maioria, indivíduos obesos apresentavam doença periodontal. Em outros 2 artigos foram analisados a resposta de pacientes obesos a terapia periodontal não cirúrgica, onde indivíduos obesos mostraram ter resultados adversos, como complicações infecciosas e cicatrização comprometida e ainda que indivíduos que passaram por cirurgia bariátrica tiveram melhores respostas a terapia do que os que não a fizeram. CONCLUSÃO: Apesar de existirem evidências fortes que indiquem uma relação entre obesidade e doença periodontal, ainda são necessários mais estudos para esclarecimento dos mecanismos envolvidos nesse processo patogênico.
