La inscripción en la UNESCO de la expresión “Lugares de memoria y tradiciones vivas de los pueblos otomí-chichimecas de Tolimán; la Peña de Bernal, guardiana de un territorio sagrado”, está cumpliendo diez años y es de nuestro interés construir una visión crítica desde dos categorías que reflejan sus múltiples contradicciones: patrimonio y extractivismo. El objetivo general es mostrar la manera como las declaratorias de la UNESCO se convierten en formas de extractivismo institucionalizado que en pro de la salvaguardia y conservación de la memoria y la cultura generan procesos extensivos e intensivos de extracción. Para ello exponemos los resultados de la investigación realizada del 2019-2020 para la elaboración del Plan de salvaguardia del semidesierto queretano, y como análisis situado mostramos el caso del pueblo de San Sebastián de Bernal, municipio de Ezequiel Montes. Cerramos haciendo un llamado de alerta a los grupos portadores de la cultura apelando a su protagonismo histórico para preservar sus expresiones culturales, ya sea desde la defensa del territorio o desde sus propias iniciativas comunitarias, locales, y de autogestión.
