Objetivo: Analisar a prática do aleitamento materno e da alimentação complementar de lactentes usuários de uma unidade básica de saúde da família (UBSF) de Macaé. Métodos: Realizou-se um estudo seccional, de base primária em uma UBSF, no período de outubro de 2016 a fevereiro de 2017, com mães e responsáveis de lactentes. Os dados foram coletados por entrevistadores previamente capacitados. O consumo alimentar foi avaliado por meio dos marcadores de alimentação saudável proposto pelo Sistema de Vigilância Alimentar e Nutricional. O aleitamento materno foi classificado de acordo com os parâmetros propostos pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. Resultados: Foram analisados os dados de 50 crianças, correspondendo a 80,0% do total da faixa etária da UBSF. Encontraram-se 44,8% de crianças menores de 6 meses em aleitamento materno exclusivo e 38,1% de crianças maiores de 6 meses em aleitamento materno. As proporções dos itens alimentares mais consumidos no dia anterior por crianças menores de 6 meses foram: leite de peito (85,7%), água/chá (41,4%), comida de sal (20,7%). Na faixa de 6 a 12 meses: bebidas adoçadas (53,3%), vegetal ou fruta de cor alaranjada (53,3%), iogurte (46,7%), biscoito recheado, doces ou guloseimas (26,7%), macarrão instantâneo (20,0%). Encontraram-se associações estatisticamente significativas entre o consumo de fruta e a idade materna (p-valor=0,021). Quanto aos marcadores alimentares de risco, detectou-se a associação entre o consumo de macarrão instantâneo (p-valor=0,018) e o estado civil. Conclusões: A introdução da alimentação complementar foi precoce em crianças menores de seis meses; e inadequada, considerando os itens alimentares observados, em crianças maiores de seis meses.
