Die Erforschung der Zeitschriften des 18. Jahrhunderts hat in den letzten Jahren wichtige Impulse erhalten. Nicht nur wurde die allgemeine inhaltliche Erschließung durch Großprojekte wie den Göttinger Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750Ð1815 (1997 publiziert; ein Index zu Rezensionszeitschriften ist noch im Aufbau) und die Digitalisierung von Zeitschriften der Aufklärung an der Universität Bielefeld (seit 2000) vorangetrieben. Einzelne Zeitschriften wurden darüber hinaus Gegenstand ausführlicher Spezialstudien; so nahm zum Beispiel Ute Schneider in einer 1995 erschienen Monographie Nicolais Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek als "Integrationsmedium

Ein wirkliches Manko ist das aber natürlich nicht, sondern eher eine Frage der Schwerpunktsetzung.Die "Methodengeschichte der Germanistik" ist in ihrer Anlage konsequenter als viele der vielen gängigen Einführungen in die Literaturtheorie, die den Anspruch erheben, systematisch in die methodischen Grundzüge des Faches einzuführen, dies jedoch tun, indem sie historische Traditionslinien oder Strömungen nachzeichnen, was sich dann in Kapitelgliederungen wie ‚Strukturalismus', ‚Werkimmanenz' etc. niederschlägt. Mit der Länge der einzelnen Beiträge und damit der Ausführlichkeit der Darstellung entspricht der Band in etwa diesen Einführungen. Er passt damit ebenfalls in die Lücke zwischen ausführlichen monographischen Studien zu einzelnen Methoden einerseits sowie den sehr knappen Einträgen gängiger Lexika andererseits.
