The significant feature of radiation combined injury is the occurrence of a combined effect. For decades our institute has focused on studying the key complications of radiation-burn injury, including shock, suppression of hematopoiesis and immunity, gastrointestinal damage and local refractory wound healing. Here we summarize recent advancements in elucidating the mechanisms of and potential treatments for radiation combined injury. Concerning the suppression and regeneration of hematopoiesis in radiation combined injury, mechanisms of megakaryocyte damage have been elucidated and a new type of fusion protein stimulating thrombopoiesis has been developed and is being tested in animals. With regard to the damage and repair of intestinal epithelium, the important molecular mechanisms of radiation combined injury have been clarified, and new measures to prevent and treat gastrointestinal tract injury are proposed. With respect to the difficulties encountered in wound healing, the underlying causes of radiation combined injury have been proposed, and some potential methods to accelerate wound closure are under study. Systemic experiments have been done to determine the appropriate time for eschar excision and skin grafting, and the results provided significant insight into clinical treatment of the injury. In the search for early therapeutic regimens for severe burns and radiation combined injury to prevent deterioration of injuries and to improve survival, cervical sympathetic ganglion block was used for the treatment of animals with radiation combined injury and had significant benefits. These research advancements have potential for application in on-site emergency rescue and in-hospital treatment of radiation combined injury.
BackgroundTranslational medicine is attracting much attention worldwide and many translational research organizations (TROs) have been established. In China, translational medicine has developed rapidly, but faces many challenges. This study was aimed at exploring these challenges faced by emerging TROs in China.MethodA qualitative, multiple case study approach was used to assess the challenges faced by TROs in China. Data were collected between May and August 2012.ResultsEight cases were identified. Overall, four themes that characterized TROs in China emerged from analyses: 1. objectives, organizer, and funding resources, 2. participating partners and research teams, 3. management, and 4. achievements. All TROs had objectives related to translating basic discovery to clinic treatment and cultivating translational researchers. In terms of organizer and funding resources, 7 out of 8 TROs were launched only by universities and/or hospitals, and funded mostly through research grants. As for participating partners and multidisciplinary research teams, all but one of the TROs only involved biomedical research institutions who were interested in translational research, and characterized as clinical research centers; 7 out of 8 TROs involved only researchers from biomedicine and clinical disciplines and none involved disciplines related to education, ethnicity, and sociology, or engaged the community. Current management of the TROs were generally nested within the traditional research management paradigms, and failed to adapt to the tenets of translational research. Half of the TROs were at developmental stages defined as infrastructure construction and recruitment of translational researchers.ConclusionsTROs in China face the challenge of attracting sustainable funding sources, widening multidisciplinary cooperation, cultivating multi-disciplinary translational researchers and adapting current research management to translational research. Greater emphasis should be placed on increasing multidisciplinary cooperation, and innovating in education programs to cultivate of translational researchers. Efforts should be made to reform research management in TROs, and establish sustainable funding resources.
Abstract:To understand the role of green credit in maintaining economic sustainability, we develop theoretical hypotheses including expectation, supervision and capital allocation channels to explain the impacts of green credit. Then, we use hybrid econometric models by using Chinese-listed enterprises in the energy-saving and environmental sectors from 2007 to 2015 as the research sample to verify the above hypotheses. The empirical results show that: (1) the average value of financial performance and operational efficiency is relatively low, and the endogenous abilities of those enterprises have not yet been established; (2) the issuance of green loans does not improve public expectations of enterprises in the green industry, thus the expectation channel is not supported; (3) the issuance of green loans does not necessarily improve the enterprise's operational efficiency and financial performance, thus the supervision channel hypotheses are not supported; and (4) green loans lead to an increase in financing costs, management costs, operation costs, and expenditure on R&D, thus, the capital allocation hypothesis is partly supported. Based on the empirical analysis, we also provide some countermeasures to strengthen the roles of green credit to support the development of energy-saving and environmental enterprises.
