The cost of searching for two visual targets simultaneously was compared against two separate single-target searches using exposure time and accuracy measures within a staircase procedure. Dualtarget search for all stimuli (colour, shape and orientation) exhibited a loss of accuracy for one target. For orientation and shape, this dual-target cost in accuracy was extreme, with chance-level performance on one target.
The behavioral inhibition system [Gray, J. A. The neuropsychology of anxiety: An enquiry into the functions of the septo-hippocampal system. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1982] proposes that anxiety is associated with the processing of novel stimuli. We aimed to explore this relationship by recording auditory event-related potentials associated with unexpected novel noises in typically developing children. Children aged 10-14 years with low (n = 12) and high (n = 11) self-report trait anxiety were assessed using a novelty oddball task. The N1 associated with novel stimuli, specifically the "N1c" component maximal at temporal lobe sites, was of significantly longer latency (p = .014) and greater amplitude (p = .004) in the high compared with the low anxious group. This group difference was supported by linear correlations between N1c amplitude and trait anxiety scores. There was no effect of anxiety on the later novelty P3. These data suggest a subtle moderating role of trait anxiety on brain response to novelty, and further research with clinically anxious children is indicated.
Strategies to reduce sexual assault on women patients in mental health inpatient acute wards have included effective policies, a consistent approach to recording and monitoring data relating to incidences of sexual assault, increased staff levels and improvements in the ward layout. A series of workshops were devised to enable mental health staff to work with greater awareness and sensitivity to keep women patients safer on inpatient wards. What emerged in particular during the training was the ways in which staff felt at loss as to how to build therapeutic relationships with women patients, particularly those with histories of sexual abuse. These patients may repeat early ways of relating which may at times be a challenge for the staff caring for them. This paper suggests that psychoanalytic insights offer an understanding of these ways of relating. This can be combined with frequent and supportive supervision to enable staff to safely articulate their often troubling responses to caring for women patients, this creating a caring and supportive environment for staff.
The demand for sublimation of one's primitive and “evil” instincts plays a crucial role in Nietzsche's ethics. But prominent misreadings of Nietzsche's concept of sublimation have led to errors in interpreting his view of the highest type of man. I argue that Nietzsche's view of sublimation is that it is the elevation of the objects of a drive through reinterpretation or reimagining them in such a way that the attainment of these new objects achieves a greater potency of expression for the drive while retaining its intrinsic aims. I also clarify the function of sublimation in his ethics.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
