Resumo Este artigo visa a analisar os textos preambulares de autoria de Machado de Assis ou de instâncias ficcionais por ele criadas, tanto os autorais, como os alógrafos. O exame dessas páginas pré-textuais enquanto espécies de exórdios baseia-se em aproximações preliminares entre literatura e retórica e entre livro e discurso. Esboçada essa ponte entre retórica antiga e tradição tipográfica, investigam-se os antelóquios machadianos no exercício de múltiplas funções, que convergem no desejo do autor em direcionar a leitura de suas obras. Embora muitos dos prefácios alógrafos de Machado tenham sido recolhidos nas Obras completas do autor, trazemos, em anexo, uma proposta de edição desses escritos com o intuito de facilitar seu exame em conjunto, enquadrando-os em seus respectivos contextos de publicação.
Em chave comparatista, esta dissertação pretende analisar os efeitos de sentido produzidos pelos contos "A Chinela Turca", "Uma Visita de Alcebíades" e "Na Arca", de Machado de Assis, nos diferentes suportes editoriais em que foram inicialmente publicados. Ademais de terem sido reunidos na coletânea Papéis Avulsos, organizada em 1882 pelo próprio autor, cada um dos contos em questão foi publicado em um jornal da época: "A Chinela Turca" na folha A Epocha, em novembro de 1875; "Uma Visita de Alcebíades" no Jornal das Famílias, em outubro de 1876; e "Na Arca" n'O Cruzeiro, em maio de 1878. Sendo assim, além da análise intrínseca dos textos, a presente investigação conferirá destaque aos conceitos de ambiência discursiva e de mediação editorial, tendo em vista o pressuposto mais amplo de examinar o modo por meio do qual os diferentes espaços de publicação de um escrito participam da significação por ele produzida. Por fim, esses três contos são os únicos presentes no livro que foram publicados antes de Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas, isto é, ainda durante o período conhecido como a "primeira fase" da obra do escritor. Em perspectiva mais ampla, portanto, propõe-se estabelecer conexões, ainda que sumariamente, entre elementos provenientes dos estudos machadianos, da teoria literária e da história da imprensa e do livro no Brasil a partir dos referidos contos e de suas trajetórias de veiculação.
O presente artigo pretende analisar as correlações entre a prosa de Machado de Assis e suas visões sobre teatro, a partir principalmente de elementos do conto “A Chinela Turca”, publicado inicialmente no jornal A Epocha (1875) e depois na coletânea Papéis Avulsos (1882). Para tanto, a obra de Machado será vista a partir da chave interpretativa que leva em consideração seus escritos como um sistema orgânico e coeso.
Resumo: Este artigo tem como objetivo recuperar e analisar textos críticos publicados quando do lançamento da primeira edição de Papéis avulsos, considerado o primeiro livro de contos da chamada "segunda maneira" de Machado de Assis. Procura-se examinar como a recepção ao livro em questão, depois do desconcerto causado na crítica com a edição das Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, corrobora a proeminente posição que já vinha sendo ocupada pelo autor, bem como desdobra e cristaliza alguns lugares-comuns que, posteriormente, irão se consolidar ao longo da tradição de leitura de sua obra. O artigo reúne também, em anexo, uma proposta de edição da fortuna crítica de Papéis avulsos publicada em periódicos no calor da hora, sobretudo, ao final de 1882.
