Os integrantes da ordem Odonata são popularmente conhecidos como donzelinhas e libélulas(Costa et al., 2012) A Ordem atualmente está dividida em três subordens: Zygoptera, Anisozygoptera e Anisoptera (Tillyard & Frazer,1938) é composta por cerca de 6.000 espécies (Shende & Patil, 2013; Slater Museum, 2013), no entanto,é provável que o número de espécies possa alcançar as 10 mil.. Os indivíduos da subordem Anisoptera podem ser reconhecidos por apresentarem as bases das asas anteriores e posteriores diferentes que durante o pouso permanecem abertas (Souza et al., 2007). Desta subordem são conhecidas quatro famílias para o Brasil: Aeshnidae, Gomphidae, Corduliidae e Libellulidae. Há uma carência de estudos específicos da fauna de Odonata na Chapada Diamantina, assim, este projeto pretende apresentar resultados inéditos da fauna de Anisoptera (Odonata) de áreas de proteção ambiental, através de uma lista dos Odonatos que ocorrem nesta região.
Ambientes costeiros como estuários e baías desempenham papel importante nodesenvolvimento da fauna marinha, visto que eles funcionam como berçários tanto paraespécies típicas quanto oceânicas que migram para estas áreas no período de reprodução, alémde sua importância como sítio de alimentação para muitas espécies de peixes, rota demigração, área de desova e produção de recursos pesqueiros para fins econômicos(RODRIGUEZ ROMERO et al., 1994; SANTOS, 2001).
Libélula, donzelinha, lavadeira, jacinta, cavalo-de-judeu, cavalinho-do-diabo, zigue-zague e cigarrinha, são alguns dos nomes pelos quais são conhecidos os integrantes da ordem Odonata (Costa et al., 2012). A Ordem Odonata é cosmopolita e atualmente está dividida em três subordens: Zygoptera, Anisozygoptera e Anisoptera (Tillyard & Frazer,1938). No Brasil há ocorrência de representantes de Zygoptera e Anisoptera.São insetos hemimetábolos, anfibióticos, com ninfas aquáticas e adultos terrestres, cujo tamanho varia entre 15 e 175 mm de comprimento. Podem ser reconhecidas facilmente pelo formato da cabeça redonda e móvel, com um par de olhos compostos grandes, laterais, e muito desenvolvidos, característica marcante na diferenciação das subordens, sendo em Anisoptera unidos, e em Zygoptera separados; presença de peças bucais mastigadoras, asas bem desenvolvidas, geralmente hialinas retangulares e longas, formadas por duas camadas unidas e fortalecidas pelo conjunto de veias que possuem grande importância na sistemática do grupo (Costa et al., 2012); tórax forte, abdômen alongado e pernas fortes voltadas para frente em formato de cesta, o que facilita a captura de presas durante o voo.O número de espécies de Odonata para o mundo varia desde 5.400 espécies (Costa et al., 2012) até cerca de 6.000 espécies (Shende & Patil, 2013; Slater Museum, 2013), sendo quase 2.600 pertencentes à subordem Zygoptera e mais de 2.800 à subordem Anisoptera (Costa et al. 2012). No entanto é provável que esse número possa alcançar as 10.000 espécies. No Brasil há registros de 849 espécies, 14 famílias e 140 gêneros, com estimativas de 1.500 espécies para o Brasil (Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil, 2016).Na Bahia a odonatofauna ainda é pouco conhecida, estudos recentes listaram 51 espécies divididas em 26 gêneros para esta região (Cravalho & Bravo, 2014). Na Bahia, há registros de 32 espécies divididas em 18 gêneros (Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil, 2016). No recôncavo baiano, no entanto, não há estudos para a fauna de Odonata. Deste modo, este projeto pretende apresentar inventário taxonômico da fauna de Odonata de áreas localizadas em zonas de mata atlântica de Santo Amaro da Purificação (recôncavo baiano), distrito de Pedras (recôncavo baiano), e no município de Mata de São João
