Introdução: A atrofia muscular espinhal (AME) é uma doença neurodegenerativa recessiva, que se caracteriza pela deleção ou mutação homozigótica do gene SMN1, responsável pela produção da proteína de sobrevivência do motoneurônio (SMN). Essa alteração genética de deficiência de produção da proteína acarreta degeneração dos motoneurônios alfa (α), gerando o quadro de fraqueza e paralisia muscular progressiva. Objetivo: Discutir a fisiopatologia da atrofia muscular espinal e os possíveis tratamentos e estudos recentes acerca da doença. Método: Os dados foram coletados a partir de artigos do Scielo, PubMed e MEDLINE. Resultados: O tratamento para AME inclui nutrição, fisioterapia, cuidado respiratório e a terapia genica . Conclusão: Inúmeros quadros podem ser acometidos aos pacientes com AME, por isso o cuidado ao paciente é essencial para promover o melhor tratamento possível e uma boa qualidade de vida aos indivíduos.
