Baseada na terminologia normativa definida pela Organização Internacional de Normalização (ISO, do inglês International Organization for Standardization) e publicada em setembro de 2008 (TS 27687 -"Nanotechnology -terminology and definitions for the "nano-objects", i.e., Nanoparticle, nanofiber and nanoplate"), a definição de "nano-objetos" é resguardada a partir dos seguintes parâmetros:(i) As dimensões de nano compreendem o intervalo entre 1 e 100 nm.(ii) Objetos nano são materiais com pelo menos uma de suas dimensões no domínio nano.Dentre os nano-objetos, podemos destacar três exemplos frequentemente alvos de estudos na área de nanotecnologia e ciências de materiais.
