-This paper discusses the performance of an 800m 3 full-scale UASB reactor in treating meatpacking plant and slaughterhouse effluents containing high concentrations of oil and grease (O&G) (413-645 mg/L), resulting in a COD/O&G ratio of 26-32%. Those macromolecules were considered responsible for the unbalance of the system resulting in a total washout of the biomass. The removal of O&G from the influent using a physicochemical system (coagulation-flocculation) improved the physical characteristics of the anaerobic sludge, controlling the biomass washout. Reactor performance was significantly improved when the COD/O&G ratio influent was maintained in the 10%. The COD and O&G removal rates obtained after implantation of the physicochemical system were 70-92% and 27-58%, respectively. The specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of the biomass shows towards a tendency stabilisation and adaptation to the substrate influent. Pretreatment of the influent allowed the maximum organic load to be increased (1.46 to 2.43 Kg COD/m 3 .d) and improved the quality of the effluent.

Brazil has one of the largest herds of cattle in the world, with more than 170 million heads. Over 400 farms have exported more than 2,875 ton (in 1997) of leather to Europe. The wet blue tanning process uses chemicals such as chromium compounds and produces liquid wastes that must be treated by physicochemical and biological systems. About 15,000 ton per month of dewatering sludge with 24% solids content is disposed of into landfills. During the process, pre-tanned skins (wet blue leather) are shaved to the desired thickness and the shavings, like sludge, are among the wastes that must have special attention. The organic content and chromium concentration are high. About 12% of the leather production from cattle hides are shavings, and its chromium concentration ranges from 3.5 to 5.5% of dry matter. The Environmentally friendly leather project, a co-operation between Brazilian and German tanneries, universities and technical schools, is looking for process optimisation, waste minimisation and adequate treatment for solid and liquid wastes from the leather industry. This work presents results of Low Temperature Conversion of chrome-containing sludge and shavings in a laboratory batch reactor, offering a solution for these hazardous wastes, recovering the energy content and transforming metals in insoluble sulphides.

O pós-tratamento de efluentes de reatores anaeróbios é um processo necessário para o atendimento dos padrões de emissão. Os resultados aqui apresentados mostram a viabilidade de uso de uma nova configuração de biofiltro aeróbio submerso (BAS) no pós-tratamento desses efluentes. Os BAS multiestágio apresentam uma câmara anaeróbia (V=12,6L), seguido de uma câmara aeróbia (V=30L) e uma câmara anóxica (V=26,4L), todas em série (V total=70L). Neste estudo, foi analisada a remoção de sólidos suspensos (SS), DQO e DBO5. Foram utilizados três BAS multi-estágio preenchidos com três diferentes materiais-suporte: tampas e gargalos PET (165m²/m³), pedra britada n. 4 (50m²/m³) e anéis Pall 1,5'' (135m²/m³). Os reatores foram operados com valores de tempos de detenção hidráulicas (TDH) de 4,1, 8,2 e 12,3 horas, e três taxas de aplicação superficial (TAS) (21, 12 e 8m³/m².d). A associação dos reatores UASB+BAS possibilitou remoções de DQO total superiores a 90% para os BAS 1 e 3, e 85% para o BAS 2, sendo independente do TDH aplicado. A remoção de SS foi maior no BAS contendo anéis Pall, provavelmente devido ao maior índice de vazios desse material.

This article presents results from a toxicity reduction evaluation program intended to describe wastewater from the metalworking industry that was treated using a conventional physico-chemical process. The toxicity of the wastewater for the microcrustacean Daphnia magna was predominantly expressive. Alkaline cyanide wastewater generated from electroplating accounted for the largest number of samples with expressive toxicity. When the raw wastewater concentrations in the batches were repeated, inexpressive toxicity variations were observed more frequently among the coagulated-flocculated samples. At the coagulation-flocculation step, 22.2 % of the treatments had reduced acute toxicity, 30.6 % showed increased toxicity, and 47.2 % remained unchanged. The conductivity and total dissolved solids contents of the wastewater indicated the presence of salts with charges that were inappropriate for the survival of daphnid. The wastewaters treated by neutralization and coagulation-flocculation had average metallic compound contents that were greater than the reference toxic concentrations reported in other studies, suggesting that metals likely contributed to the toxic effects of the wastewater on freshwater microcrustaceans. Thus, alternative coagulants and flocculants should be assessed, and feasible doses should be determined to improve wastewater treatment. In addition, advanced treatment processes should be assessed for their abilities to remove dissolved toxic salts and ions.

Post-treatment of an UASB reactor effluent, fed with domestic sewage, was conducted using two-stage flotation and UV disinfection. Results were compared to those obtained in a parallel stabilisation pond. The first flotation stage employed 5 - 7.5 mg L(-1) cationic flocculant to separate off more than 99% of the suspended solids. Then, phosphate ions were completely recovered using carrier flotation with 5-25 mg L(-1) of Fe (FeCl3) at pH 6.3-7.0. This staged flotation led to high recoveries of water and allowed us to separate organic matter and phosphate bearing sludge. The water still contained about 1 x 10(2) NMP/100 mL total coliforms, which were removed using UV radiation to below detection levels. Final water turbidity was < 1.0 NTU, COD < 20 mg L(-1) O2 and 71 mNm(-1), the liquid/air interfacial tension. This flotation-UV flowsheet was found to be more efficient than the treatment in the stabilisation pond and appears to have some potential for water reuse. Results were discussed in terms of the biological, chemical and physicochemical mechanisms involved.

Este trabalho versa sobre a utilização de uma estratégia de otimização de uma estação de tratamento de efluentes de uma indústria de embalagens de papel, com problemas de "foaming". Os resultados do diagnóstico inicial mostraram que o tratamento primário alcançou uma eficiência superior a 70% na remoção de sólidos suspensos. As modificações operacionais realizadas foram limpezas das caixas de gordura, redução da geração de óleos e graxas nos pontos de geração. As modificações no processo na ETE foram à implementação da equalização da vazão de alimentação do tanque de aeração, adição de hipoclorito de sódio na entrada do sedimentador secundário, adição de ácido fosfórico para equilibrar a relação entre nutrientes e DBO5 e a manutenção de uma concentração e idade do lodo constante durante o processo.
