Evaluation of low-cost methods for discharge measurements in rivers ABSTRACTIncreasing rates of pollution and over-exploitation have reduced the availability of water in many regions of the world. In this context, the qualitative and quantitative management of available water resources becomes paramount. Thus, this study evaluated the applicability of two low-cost discharge measurement methods that are adequately precise: the electromagnetic method and the culvert method. The methods were applied in the field (Ribeirão da Onça Basin) in order to assess their advantages and disadvantages with reference to the conventional method of discharge measurement. Compared with the traditional method, the electromagnetic method resulted in a deviation of -5%, but allowed velocity measurements in the turbulent conditions caused by the channel's side walls. The culvert method resulted in discharge deviations of 2.1%; however, it had limitations in high water situations. The two
The estimation of the uncertainty associated with stage-discharge relations is a challenge to the hydrologists. Bayesian inference with likelihood estimator is a promissory approach. The choice of the likelihood function has an important impact on the capability of the model to represent the residues. This paper aims evaluate two likelihood functions with DREAM algorithm to estimate specific non-unique stage-discharge rating curves: normal likelihood function and Laplace likelihood function. The result of BaRatin is also discussed. The MCMC of the DREAM and the BaRatin algorithm have been compared and its results seem consistent for the studied case. The Laplace likelihood function presented as good results as normal likelihood function for the residues. Other gauging stations should be evaluated to attend more general conclusions.
Histerese Hydroelectric Plants (UHE-Usinas Hidroelétricas) are importantly represented on the Brazilian energy scene, and provide the base for the National Interconnected System (SIN Sistema Interligado Nacional). However, one of the consequences of UHE operation is changes in the natural hydrological regimes of the river system both upstream and downstream from the dam. For this reason this paper analyzes the possible hydrological changes at a rivergauging station downstream from a hydropower plant, based on field campaigns with flow measurements carried out during the period from 1965 to 2014, bathymetric surveys and historical series of water levels The results obtained for Porto São José Station (PSJ) in Paraná river, 30 km downstream from UJE Porto Primavera and UHE Rosana, indicate the occurrence of erosion in the PSJ section with a 28% increase in the wetted area and 20% reduction of mean velocity. Because of these changes a new rating curve was determined for the permanent flow condition, and the non-permanent flow condition (hysteresis) was identified and corrected for PSJ....
