A Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina - UDESC, a Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina - UFSC, o Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina- IFSC, a Universidade Estadual de Campinas- UNICAMP e a Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro PUC – RJ engajaram-se na Rede de Cooperação Acadêmica Internacional Lixo Zero – NIZAC, com o objetivo de enfrentar um dos maiores desafios antropogênicos da sustentabilidade global, a grande geração de resíduos sólidos nos ambientes urbanos. Neste contexto, o presente artigo discute os avanços e os desafios para a implementação dessa rede de cooperação acadêmica nas universidades brasileiras, a partir de informações obtidas por meio de aplicação de questionários às referidas instituições. Os principais resultados da implementação da rede são sistematizados e avaliados, constando que apesar dos programas Lixo Zero das universidades brasileiras estarem em fase inicial, existem avanços na gestão de resíduos sólidos e recursos de seus campi, como a redução de utilização de copos descartáveis. Entretanto, ainda existem desafios para que o conceito Lixo Zero seja aplicado transversalmente em todas as esferas das universidades, destacando a necessidade da institucionalização destes programas.
