The book traces the debate that absorbed the community of historians - and the humanities more generally - in the decades of the linguistic turn, the theoretical movement that placed language at the centre of philosophical reflection between the 1970s and 1990s. Examining the linguistic turn in the light of the category of postmodernism, the authors reconstruct the controversies, genealogies and ramifications of a movement that was anything but homogeneous. A discipline traditionally secure in its methods and results, history has emerged far more uneasy and doubtful about the possibility of producing objective and verifiable knowledge.
