El objetivo del presente estudio fue demostrar como el autoconcepto físico puede ser uno de los factores predictores de la intención de ser físicamente activo mediante un análisis correlacional. La presente investigación tiene un diseño no experimental de corte transversal, enfoque cuantitativo y alcance correlacional. La muestra se obtuvo mediante un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia, teniendo a 43 atletas, 23 varones y 20 mujeres de edades comprendidas entre los 10 y 17 años (M=15,3), pertenecientes a la Escuela de Atletismo Corredores del Sur del cantón Paltas, provincia Loja. (M=15,3), los instrumentos que se aplicaron fueron; la escala de Autoconcepto Físico (PSPP) y Medida de la Intencionalidad para ser Físicamente Activo (MIFA); una vez aplicados los cuestionarios se realizó un análisis estadístico en el programa SPSS 25. Tras un análisis factorial exploratorio y confirmatorio de correlación y de regresión lineal, los resultados revelaron que la intención de ser físicamente activo es predicha por el autoconcepto físico. De todas las dimensiones de este constructo, la competencia percibida fue el mayor predictor. Algunos autores consideran sumamente importante, en la promoción de la práctica físico-deportiva, que el profesor de educación física establezca estrategias de intervención en su proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje para mejorar la percepción de competencias, condición física, fuerza, imagen corporal y autoestima.
