Um sistema de irrigação com dimensionamento otimizado minimiza os custos de implantação e operacional. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade econômica-financeira da otimização de dois sistemas de irrigação tipo pivôs centrais, comparando as características do dimensionamento existente com a simulação de um dimensionamento otimizado. O trabalho avaliou dois pivôs centrais com mais de 15 anos de instalação. A viabilidade foi realizada com base no tempo de retorno do investimento, e aceita caso o retorno sobre investimento (do inglês Return on Investment-ROI) máximo seja 4 anos. Os resultados demonstraram que com a otimização, a potência necessária na motobomba dos pivôs I e II passariam de 200 cv e 150 cv existentes para 90 cv, em ambos sistemas. No pivô I com a substituição de todo o sistema, o ROI variou de 6,07 a 8,78 anos e quando proposto manter a linha lateral, o ROI caiu para 1,82 a 2,71 anos. O pivô II, apenas a tubulação adutora e a motobomba tiveram sugestão de substituição resultando no ROI variando de 2,38 a 3,51 anos. Ambos os pivôs centrais possuem um superdimensionamento, sendo o pivô I mais distante do ideal. Contudo, ambos os pivôs demostram viabilidade econômica e financeira para sua otimização, com base na substituição parcial do sistema promovendo a redução do custo com energia elétrica.
