Background: This study raised the following problem: How reliable is the Inclusion for Children and Adolescents Questionnaire (ICAQ) when measuring the attitudes of students with hearing loss towards inclusive education (IE) in public schools in the Canary Islands? Methods: The sample consisted of 297 students from the province of Gran Canaria, and 137 students from the province of Tenerife, with an average age of 11 years old. An exploratory factor analysis determined the reliability and relevance of ICAQ. Results: The authors found four factors of students’ attitudes towards IE: Family involvement and use of technology, inclusion in the centre, communication with medical specialists, and assessment of the support technology. Conclusion: There were significant differences between the students with hearing loss in terms of the following factors: Inclusion in the centre and assessment of the support technology. The total score of students’ attitudes towards IE was high. This piece of research is very important for the governing body of any school administration, especially in relation to schools’ educational planning and IE.
Objectives The current study evaluated deaf and hard-of-hearing students' mental health in terms of emotional and behavioral strengths and difficulties, as measured by the SDQ in the Canary Islands. Furthermore, it evaluated the students’ psycholinguistic abilities using the Spanish version of the ITPA. Methods The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to assess school children problems. The Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities measured student spoken and written linguistic abilities. Results Student self-reports yielded different SDQ scores to parent and teacher reports. Student spoken and written linguistic abilities varied according to ten covariates. Discussion Perceptions about the mental health of children differed according to the groups studied. Perceptions about student abilities in the classroom were different, particularly the ability to reproduce sequences of complex and non-significant figures by memory. Conclusion Two outcomes emerged: a) conduct problems were the SDQ subscale that most distinguished children with cochlear implants from those with hearing aids, and b) tutor and specialist teacher experience appeared as the decisive influencing students’ psycholinguistic abilities.
The rapid growth of online learning has led to the development of faculty inservice evaluation models that are geared towards the demands of quality improvement of degree programs. Based on the best practices of student online assessment, the Online Faculty Development and Assessment System (OFDAS) created at the Canary Islands was designed to serve the dual purpose of faculty development and classroom learning environment assessment. Results of analyses showed that OFDAS maximized the potential of online faculty development to encourage staff to reflect on Curriculum and Teaching Capacities (CTC). Implications were discussed in terms of emphasizing the process of online CTC learning and incorporating perspectives to capture a comprehensive view of faculty teaching attitudes and their association with student classroom learning perceptions.
Palabras clave Indicadores, éxito, eficiencia, graduación, abandono, rendimiento, análisis DAFO, aprendizaje mezclado y a distancia. AbstractIntroduction. Spanish universities adopt performance indicators as a prominent practice of institutional renewal. In this study, university performance indicators (students' success rates, efficiency, graduation, dropout and attainment) of different fields of knowledge are analyzed to compare them with the opinion of the quality commissions of the different university centers. Methodology. Mixed methods were used: a quantitative analysis of percentage means of the different fields of knowledge for the five university performance indicators and a qualitative analysis by means of a SWOT (weaknesses, threats, strengths and opportunities) with the opinion of the quality commissions in six dimensions of content: training program, infrastructure and resources, students, teachers, and institutional elements. Results. Health Sciences are shown as the only branch of knowledge that improves the success rate in three years, however Social Sciences and Law and Engineering and Architecture improve efficiency. The Arts and Humanities branch has the highest dropout rate. Discussion. We find similarities with other studies in the success rates improvement in He...
The present study uses an international survey composed of several scales to compare diversity and social inclusion among 164 teachers and 317 students from universities and 216 practitioners. Participants belong to four countries: Italy, Poland, Romania, and Spain (IPRS). The results illustrate the same or different perspectives of teachers, students, and practitioners about competencies for 21st-century teachers, efficient professionals in inclusive education, the program of the Master's Degree in Education for diversity and social inclusion, and the components for a curriculum adaptation in IPRS. IPRS showed a clear difference among their groups of teachers, students, and practitioners. Limitations and future directions are included.
