Hona dakargun saioaren helburua saroi entitate geografikoaren banaketaz, esanahiaz nahiz etorkiaz baliagarri gerta daitezkeen argibideak ematea da, euskal toponimian kausitzen diren elementuen izaera finkatzen laguntzea alegia, bide batez, euskararen arlo fonikoaren, morfologiaren edota lexikoaren historia ikertzeko erabilgarriak izan daitezkeen datuak bilduz eta sailkatuz. Saroiak itxuratzen dituzten ezaugarriak, edota haien bilakaera, onomastikaren eskutik zenbateraino ezagut daitezkeen ere ikusi nahi dugu, saroien jatorriak argitzeke baitirau.
Lan honen helburua Juan Arin Dorronsororen «Material toponímico» argitaragabeare 25. paper-zorroan dagoen edukiaren berri ematea da, 1940. urtean hark egindako krokisean Enirio-Aralarko toponimiaz biltzen den informazioa osatzeko.
Artikuluaren mintzagaia Urumeako zilegimendietako toponimia doktorego tesia da. Ikerlan horretan aztertzen den lurraldea Gipuzkoako ipar-sortaldean dago. Donostia, Hernani eta Urnietako zenbait aurkintzak osatzen dute eta 38 km2 ditu. Neurri handi batean euskaldun dirauen eremu horrek 12. mendetik honako idatzizko informazioa baliatzeko aukera ematen du, eta hori, Gipuzkoan bederen, ez da ohiko gauza. Labur beharrez, idazki honetan egileak lau gai hartzen ditu ahotan: lanaren helburuak, esparrua, iturriak eta bildutako toponimiaren azterketatik zenbait ataletan ateratako ondorioak.
Bukaeran -(iz)amo duen leku-izen gutxi dago Euskal Herrian. Oro har, -(iz)ama dutenek harrapatzen duten eremu berean azaltzen dira eta, haiek bezala, ez dira era uniformean banatzen. Halaber, -(iz)amo duten toponimoak -(iz)ama dutenak baino bakanago eta sartalderago ageri dira, baina biek topoglosa aski nabaria osatzen dute.
Joakin Gorrotxategiren ekarpena eskertzeko saio honen asmoa Antzinateko antroponimoak eta latinetiko atzizkiak oinarritzat dituzten saroi-izenen banaketa, zentzua eta etorkia aztertzea da, Euskal Herriko populatzearen berreraiketan lagun dezakeelakoan aztertu ere. Horretarako, abiapuntua Eibarko irakaslearen 1993ko artikulu bat da: «La aportación de la lingüística a la reconstrucción del poblamiento en el País Vasco» argitalpena.
