RESUMENEste artículo permite ampliar el panorama sobre la basta información existente en la controversia sobre el cultivo de Jatropha curcas y sus posibilidades de producción de aceite para la generación de biodiesel. Se destacan sus múltiples bondades y se discute la falta de estudios bá-sicos científicos que sustenten la implementación de cultivos no solo para el estado de Tamaulipas, sino a nivel nacional, lo que establece restricciones mayores para que esta especie sea un cultivo exitoso para la producción de biocombustibles. Finalmente, se plantean las perspectivas del estudio de otras especies silvestres emparentadas (i.e. Jatropha sotoi-nunyezib, discutida en esta investigación, que en su momento aporten información sobre aspectos fundamentales tales como son: genéticos, ecológicos, ecofisiológicos, sanitarios y agroecológicos, entre otros.
